Is the name "Jack the Ripper" owned by a company?

    Is the name "Jack the Ripper" owned by a company?

    I was putting together a short film about JtR. My friend told me though that a company (he doesn't know the name) owns the rights of the name "Jack the Ripper". Is this true? And if so, I wasn't aware that you can claim the rights to a name of someone that was an actual person...

    Can anyone confirm any of this?

      Nope. Not owned legally by anyone (except maybe for the person who coined it, but s/he's unknown and dead now anyway so it doesn't really matter ).

          You might want to ask where your friend got their info from, then slap their naughty wristies. Then your friend can slap their wristies and so on and so forth..!

              He told me he got it from one of the Ripper documentaries. He didn't tell me as to which one it was though as he doesn't remember.

                  Part of your answer lies in the part in bold DTP.....Jack the Ripper was a pen name that has been since used to identify the unknown subject who committed certain murders within the Whitechapel/Spitalfield area in 1888.

                  There never was any "Jack the Ripper"....you could just as aptly call him UnSub.....its just a name used by probably a few authors of letters to the police.

                  So the name Jack the Ripper isnt copywritten or trademarked.
