What I find interesting is a brand new poster coming on right off the bat starting a thread that is completely devoted to a poster who was just banned.

Theres a lot of it about at the moment, deceit, leg pulling, call it what you will, I would not be surprised if all the latest tomfoolery had a common source

Sorry I didnt use Collins, I used Merriam-Webster's for the main definitions then added the slang terms I knew.

So you are using the shortened version of The Gaffer as in "to do a bad job of something" that is my understandign of the slang of "to make a pigs ear" of something. is that correct?

I also understand the british slang term Gaffer means boss or old man aslo.
Here on the west coast of America the term would mean you are the head of the electrical and lighting department for a film production crew.

Hi Smezenen. "To make a pig's ear of something" does indeed mean "To do a bad job" however I was only pointing this out as you missed it from your list of definitions. I am using it as my name to mean The Boss. I obviously made a "Dog's dinner" out of that one - there add that to your list of English idioms.

Archaic: You are indeed correct, to "gaffe" is to err but according to dictionary.com, "gaff" can also be used as a variant of gaffe.

Anyway, back onto topic, enough about my nick. Was the thread I mentioned deleted for Golden's protection, or ours?

It was deleted no doubt because it was bullshit spam, and this thread ought to be deleted also for the same reason. It has nothing to do with jack, it's not in the right forum, and you are just stirring crap for the sake of stirring crap. You apparently have no real interest in the case because you haven't posted anything relevant about it. So what's your purpose here, other than to stir crap?

While I cant speak for the administrators of this site, I believe he was banned becouse his posts where, in my opinion, poor attemps to discredit this website through pure lunacy. Some of his postings where attempts to hijack the treads in order to spread his opinion that only criminals would read about other criminals.

Just for the record everyone, we have someone who immediately goes on the offensive when I started a new thread and then resorts to disparraging remarks about me and my question simply because I wasn't riled by her first comment. A psychologist would have a field day on someone who makes public insults on an open forum to strangers, and what she thinks are new posters at that. Why all the paranoia? Has it been that bad here with people pretending to be someone else?

Although some comments are provocative I am going to rise above it and carry on pursuing my interest in the subject at hand. Which may mean that I too am stepping out of this one.

What precise interest is that? I mean as far as I can see, the interest you have demonstrated in the subject at hand consists entirely of making baiting posts about banned posters and deleting threads and your actual posts regarding Jack the Ripper are nowhere to be found.
