    Cannot Retrieve Thread

Can anyone point me to the thread which was started last week by a poster called "Golden Messenger" and was entitled "You won't beleive your ears" or something along those lines.

I found the thread very entertaining but now I am unable to find it. It seems to have disappeared. Can anyone help me?

I thought so. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll never forget some of his quotes. "Why do you all enjoy visiting a website about a serial killer" leading him to conclude that we all had serial killer instincts. Therefore anyone interested in crime (police officers included) must be criminals. Class!

Yep,the guy was a plonker, but it didn't help some people believing what he was typing and encouraging him - just shows how gullible some people are even in these times.

I didn't realise that whole threads were deleted. Is this normal practice anyone know or was it in order to protect the individual concerned?

What I find interesting is a brand new poster coming on right off the bat starting a thread that is completely devoted to a poster who was just banned.

                  THEGAFF,
Which definition of Gaff are you intending with your screen name?

                  AS A NOUN:
                  1. A large iron hook attached to a pole or handle and used to land large fish.
                  2. A spar attached to the mast and used to extend the upper edge of a fore-and-aft sail.
                  3.
                  a. A sharp metal spur or spike fastened to the leg of a gamecock.
                  b. A climbing hook used by telephone and electric line workers.

                  AS SLANG:
                  4. A trick or gimmick, especially one used in a swindle or to rig a game.
                  5. Harshness of treatment; abuse.
                  6. Transgender devise worn to hide male genitals.

                  AS A VERB:
                  7. To hook or land (a fish) using a gaff.
                  8. To equip (a gamecock) with a gaff.

Or is there another meaning im not aware of?
'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - beer in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride!'

                    Really?

How about Gaff, as in, "Everyone round to my gaff"
                    Regards Mike

Actually yes Smezenen, to make a gaff (verb) is also to make a pig's ear of something. Maybe your Collins needs updating.

When I chose the name, a few years ago now, it was meant to be short for thegaffer.

                        Ally: I totally agree

Isn't gaff also a slang word for your place of residence - i.e. come and stay at my gaff?

Hi, I think it's the word "gaffe" that means "to make a big mistake, embarrass oneself, or totally blow it."

(I'm going to run away from this thread now because I agree with Ally; it smells kinda fishy.)

                            Have fun! Archaic

Sorry I didnt use Collins, I used Merriam-Webster's for the main definitions then added the slang terms I knew.

So you are using the shortened version of The Gaffer as in "to do a bad job of something" that is my understandign of the slang of "to make a pigs ear" of something. is that correct?

I also understand the british slang term Gaffer means boss or old man aslo.
Here on the west coast of America the term would mean you are the head of the electrical and lighting department for a film production crew.
