    does anyone know where you can find a street map of whitechapel in 1888 and one of todays whitechapel. also the river and sewage lines of the time (1888) and of today.

    I can't speak for UK records, but in researching the same years and matters here in the USA, first stop has always been the records and maps in the largest/best established library of the area, followed by the local Historical organizations-- However, municipalities, tax offices and other district offices (water, sewage, dept. of transit, etc) are also worth a look. Whitechapel street maps (1880s) are available online I think, and of course any modern tourist map/guide of the city in the travel section of the local mega-bookstore usually have decent area maps, too. Hope this helps.
