  • Spiritualism

    Hello,

Am currently writing my dissertation on the public's opinion of the ripper killings. At this present moment I am looking for texts relating to spiritualism and the occult being used to catch the killer, in forms of people writing letters to one another or the editors. And also spiritualism helping cement the rippers gothic mythogical image. I was wondering if anyone could help? Bear in mind i have already read:

-Letters To The Editor - Ryder
    -Letters From Hell-Skinner

Along with the general texts of Begg and Rumbelow.

    Anyhelp is much appreciated,

    Jibby

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm OK ....IF you're determined to go along this path (Left hand or otherwise)...Ivor Williams- 'The Black Magic Rituals of JTR' must at least be read.....read it and make up your own mind!

A word to the wise though..........Careful with your posts - try to ensure your punctuation etc is correct (see ref. at top of message board site)

You might wish to get a copy of "The Search For Jack The Ripper" by Pamela Ball, which uses mediumship and horoscopes to try to solve the case.

Try searching online for information on Robert Lee's, as he was a leading "Psychic" during the murders.

In recent years there have been numerous tv shows, and books looking at the spiritulist side of it.
Derek Acorah searched for JTR in a tv show with the ISPR team.
Derek Acorah searched for JTR with the Most Haunted team, both as a live show, and part of the series.
Vic Reeves used a Pyschic policeman to help find JTR in his recent documentary.

              Good luck.
              Regards Mike

                Hi Jibby Reznor,
one Philippe Welté has written a book about the case. He talked with Mary Kelly's ghost for more than 20 years. And has of course solved the case.

Mons. Welte also filmed Kelly floating across Mitre Square as a puff of smoke, laid in a shape similar to a Walter Sickert painting.

This happened whilst there was no wind, which means he also caught an ENT on film, as the tree in the background was moving too!

Yes, i think you should be careful about confusing the Occult and Spiritualism in Ripper context. They are very different stories.

Occult books tend to lean towards the idea that the Ripper murders were commited by someone involved in Satanic Ritual.

The involvement of Spiritualism in the mythology of the Ripper case is seeped in the mythology from early days.

Robert Lee's was supposed to have followed a man through the Streets to the home of a surgeon. He was arrested and put into an asylum.

As far as i am aware there is little, if any, credible source. The stories appearing in news papers sometime after the event. I believe Jennifer Pegg is a good source for stories and sources on Lees.

Mikes information on psychics is correct. I might also add in his book Tony Stockwell does a psychic reading with a decendant of Catherine Eddows.

1888 is a time when credible scientists still took spiritualism seriously and is very much part of the flavour of the period.

                    All the best

PS if dealing with psychics avoid the 'M' word

PS PS. Another interesting idea might be to explore how Hollywood have interwoven Lees story with that of Abberline. Leaving us the mythology of the Psychic Detective hot on the trail of a ghostly killer.

To my memory, which is poor these days. Lees did offer his services at the time (dont think he was taken up) and did receive a mysterious pension from the crown.

I beleive most of the occult theories are of more modern invention, though I'm happy to stand corrected.

I have a newspaper report from 1888 which looks at the murders being carried out so that the human fat could be used for thieves candles, which in occultic tradition are used to knock out victims, whilst they are robbed.

This article predates Robert D'Onston Stephenson's suggestion that the human fat is used to make occultic candles.
