Fascinating, Chris. I can only imagine that a very short time after this letter was published, Gladstone's cries of "I told ya so!" echoed around the Reform Club bar as news of the "prasarved" Lusk kidney broke!
What's particularly interesting is that here we have one of the most highly-educated statesmen that this country has ever had, favouring the (in hindsight, slightly loopy) notion of a "mad scientist", or similar, as the Whitechapel Murderer.
Jeeze,! So Gladstone thinks its more morally acceptable to cut up a few whores, if its for the human good, and that somehow would put the ripper in a better light.
I thought the old man was suppose to be a Christian. Some very confused ethics here.
Miss Marple
Kudos on having the bottle to post it - when I saw it a while back, I wondered if it was a parody, and after umming and arring I chickened out of posting it.
It's really quite extraordinary, isn't it. "So-called murderer"!
