Another one who started with 'Autumn of Terror'...as a bloodthirsty 14-year old in 1970....although I ticked the appropriate box,'studied' isn't the right word....It's something I keep a watching brief on,but I don't give it the same degree of commitment I give my Military history stuff.
Steve
You've only got five more years and we expect an answer
More studying over Xmas x
Not that I suggest picking on Jane, she's a keeper,...we have great women posters here actually from all ends of the experiences spectrum,... but Im with you Pirate, what of all the multiple decade students....c'mon,...you gotta have some idea. How about saving the next generation your torment.
For what it's worth...In 30 years, the only theories I've thought 'might be' about are Druitt & Kosminsky/Cohen etc.Others fall into the 'here we go again' category...Or just don't seem right....'tho some are interesting in their own right.
Steve
I voted over 40 because I read my first book on the Ripper - Robin Odell's JTR in Fact and Fiction - over 40 years ago. Of course I had been aware of the Ripper as a character in books, radio, comics and film, particularly The Lodger, much earlier. As others have pointed out, my early acquaintance with the Ripper does not necessarily imply an early start as a student of the case. But it certainly signals the begining of a long interest.

Cheers Pirate, all.
yeah i think its called passing 'the buck' and its a hell of a lot easier passing it to someone more experienced than you are
I think however that at this stage in the game we must except that a diffinative answer will never be known, most Ripperologist dont even seem to be able to agree on what 'in itself' would actually be proof of guilt, let alone come up with a suspect to hang it on.
It appears Sara and I are unable to vote, since there's no category for 1 - 2 years!
Looks like I miss out again!
I fell into this case by accident when my daughter was studying it for her final year at school last year.
She became bored, while I found myself reading everything she downloaded, after she'd gone to bed. I can't believe how many people think suspects (wholly unrelated to the case) may be Jack. I found some of the pros and cons sheets she did on some of the suspects. I thought it was quite good considering she only scratched the surface of some of the characters.
Sod that! I will be rapping on the pearly gates and asking, nay demanding to speak to Jack!!

Somehow my theology doesn't have me finding Jack behind the Pearly Gates! Maybe we could all get special permission to take a trip "south" to confront him, unless he's done the typical prison conversion routine.

Hi,
My intrest in the subject goes way back to the age of approx ten years, when I can remember my grandmother born 1880, told me that when she and her brother, and sisters tried to avoid coming in for bedtime, her father used to mention the nasty London man, which had them in like a shot,
One can only imagine many a household using such tactics.
It was only around 1963 that I used to read the subject, and my very first visit to Whitechapel occured on the 31st august 1965 when I started my Autumn pilgrimage to all the sites [ as near as I knew] and I proceeded to visit the area on each date, and relevant time right through to the 9th November.
My regret is obvious, being just a eighteen year old, and not poccessing a camera, I lost out on many a atmospheric photograph, but as I have mentioned before hindsight would have been a wonderful gift, but alas computers and the web, were non starters way back then.
All these years later, I still find the subject just as intresting.
Regards Richard.

When I was a child, my grandfather, who was born in Mile End in 1883, told me the same thing: when children were a little slow coming in for the evening, mothers would stand on the front step and tell them to hurry up or JtR would get them. Now, I don't imagine this tactic was used all the time, but even if you heard it only once or twice as a youngster, it would stick with you. Anyway, his telling me about that is what first got me interested in the subject.

Who would have thought it - and only a few years since we all "knew our place" and stuck to cleaning the oven and stroking fluffy kittens.
You do realise that the only people who could have spoken with any authority at all on what the ripper was really like were the women who shared their final moments with him?
Love,
Caz

AS I put in the poll, I've been studying Jack for almost twenty years and I still consider myself a newbie. Great observation Caz! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I started as a teenager in 1989 after seeing the Michael Caine mini series Then on impulse bought a book about it and just kept on going and I'm still at it
I've been reading about Jack for a good 15 years or so on and off - and I've been an observer of the casebook for the last five years. Finally took the plunge and registered yesterday. Looking forward to the next fifteen years + (I hope).
Merry christmas to all of you.
