  • Press article - Progress (Canada) 10 Nov 1888

Last night I watched the DVD "Jack the Ripper Conspiracies"
This quoted extensively from an intriguing press article I hadnt seen. It is from a paper called Progress, published in New Brunswick, Canada, and dates from the day after the Kelly murder, 10 November 1888.
What interested me was the tone and theme of the piece - it imagined Jack getting ready to go out on his killings and the rituals he would go through to prepare.
Does any one have a copy of this article as I can find no trace of it?
    Many thanks
    Chris Scott

Chris, this sounds familiar, so I will have a look through the files shortly. I do recall seeing a fair few articles moving away from the facts, but these reffered to other cases and not JTR.

The Press Reports section does contain articles from Qu'Appelle Progress
Ontario, Canada. Maybe it's the same?

This site has the odd 19th century Canadian newspaper that can be read online e.g. Quebec Chronicle, Brandon Sun Weekly.

          Chris,

The only thing I can find that comes close to your description is The Progress, a student newspaper published sporadically by the students of the Collegiate Grammar School in Fredericton N.B. from about 1874 to the early 1900s. It doesn't sound very promising, does it.

                Chris,

A newspaper called Progress was published in New Brunswick between 1888 and 1902. It is available (apparently in hardcopy only) at the University of New Brunswick at Fredericton Library. Their main website is here.

This site is a searchable genealogical reference for many New Brunswick newspapers, including Progress. Nothing on JTR but a few mentions of Tumblety etc.

With any luck Chris, someone on the East Coast can obtain a copy of the article for you.

                  Cheers,

                  Robert

Chris, I've been trying to find the magazine article but it may not be online. There was a magazine called Once A Week but it ceased operating in 1880. However, in 1888 another mag, originally called Collier's Once A Week started appearing, and this might be the one mentioned in your newspaper.

                        Hi Robert
Yes, there was more than one publication called Once A Week but I think you have the right one. From 1888 to 1898 it was named Once a Week and then became Collier's Weekly but I cannot find any online

Chris, Hawthorne wrote a long piece about the Ripper in the Milwaukee Sentinel, Nov 2 1890.
