  • Murder Of A Woman In Durham

MURDER OF A WOMAN IN DURHAM.

    LONDON. SEPT. 24.
A woman has been murdered at Birtley, in the county of Durham, her body being mutilated in tho same way as the victims of the recent Whitechapel murders.
Don't recall reading anything about this, but it's caught my interest.

It was reported in numerous Australian newspapers.

Any one know anything about it.

Another report, that seems to be the same murder, indicating she was an "unfortunate".

    ANOTHER MYSTERIOUS MURDER.
Another girl of the unfortunate class has been Murdered. This crime has occurred at Gateshead (Durharm) And in its character is parallel to the recent murders in Whitechapel (London).

Of interest was the reports here of the inquest.

          THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS.
At the inquest held on the body of the
          unfortunate woman murdered at Birtley,
          County Durham, the coroner expressed
the opinion that this and the murders
which had taken place in Whitechapel had
been committed by an anatomist, who was
desirous of obtaining the organs of his
victims for exhibition for medical purposes

            Dr Phillips didn't seem to agree with the coroner;

When approached at the inquest by a journalist, the doctor ruled out any connection with the Birtley murder, claiming that it was “evidently not done by the same hand” and dismissing it as “a clumsy piece of butchery”.
