Thanks, Trevor. I hadn't seen that artefact before.

Joe Barnett, presumably.

She said she was married when very young in Wales to a collier. I think the name was Davis or Davies. She said she had lived with him until he was killed in an explosion, but I cannot say how many years since that was. Her age was, I believe, 16 when she married. After her husband's death deceased went to Cardiff to a cousin.

Funnily enough, I happened to have my copy of the Ultimate JTR Companion open on the very page showing this document.

I'd go with Sam and say the name came from Joe's evidence that she was once married to a man called Davis or Davies. Also the french version of her name, as other witnesses apparently knew her by the anglicised version.

Any idea what the asterisks by the jurors names signify, and why Henry Dawkes doesn't merit a star?

The scan is cut off at the bottom but, fortunately, I have a full version. Here's the rest of the page:

Trevor, the name also appears on MJK's death certificate. Kelly otherwise Davies.
I agree with everyone else, Joseph Barnett, who had lived with her until recently and for many months, identified MJK as Marie Jeanette Kelly and said her married name was Davis or Davies. No one came forward at the inquest to dispute that so the identification held.

I wonder if they are meant to represent those little crown stamps used in the hand written versions?
