Hello Carol, it's indeed completely meaningless.
Astrakhan-the-Ripper loosing his old and harmless knife in the Street... what else after that ?
As if the Sunday encounter in Petticoat Lane wasn't enough.

      Hello David,
I agree - I don't think Astrakhan man was the Ripper either!

Hello Carol, the difference between the Ripper and Astrakhan Man, is that the former did exist. The latter belongs to the opéra bouffe.

If you bought offal from a butcher, you could, if you were JtR, just add to, or replace the contents after a successful kill.

"Where did you get this kidney?"

"I bought it from Jack Jones the Butcher earlier today."

"Mr Jones, did this man buy meat from you earlier?"

"Certainly did. I can vouch for that. Nice bit of kidney it was."

          Regards, Bridewell.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

The traditional and time-honoured container for a womb is, of course, a woman - but for Jack to walk off carrying the dead body of Eddowes might have attracted unwanted attention.
