Hello Rob. Welcome to the boards.

From Covent Gardens to Whitechapel High street (about where Commercial is) comes to about 3 miles.

If the chap in question lived around Covent Gardens and left about 11.00, he should have arrived in Whitechapel around midnight. But if you are asking about a half hour from Covent gardens to Whitechapel, no. 3 miles is roughly an hour's walk.

Of course, we may both get the obligatory lecture on LVP time pieces.

Hi Lynn, I have tried a similar walk which was Mount Pleasant EC1 to commercial st ( that area) and whilst I'm no old codger, I still took a good hour to get there, perhaps I didn't take the shortest route but, it was a fairly brisk walk so, I know/am pretty sure you can't do that in near on 30mins.

It's just a shame because it makes it even more unbelievable & for me, whilst we always suspect very much so, that it's a work of fiction, there is always the hope that it COULD be possibly true & then (for me) it's spoilt by something as small a remark as this was - shame
Still enjoying the book though.

Yeah, as I say , spoilt it for me, if whoever wrote it just did a little bit of homework then they would know that they were talking rubbish.

Whoever wrote it probably never even went to the East End or perhaps, even London?

I wouldn't have bothered with this book but for two things:

(1) It was on offer at only £2.

(2) there's a commentary on the content by Paul Begg.

The book asks more questions than it answers and IMHO has to be a work of fiction, albeit an interesting and perceptive one in some ways. There are several things which point to this conclusion, most of which are set out in detail by Mr Begg. The clincher, for me, is that the supposed autobiography is intended by its supposed author, Carnac, to be sent posthumously to a literary agent with a view to publication. The text is gloating and portrays a man who is proud of what he has done and only too willing to highlight the shortcomings of the police. 'Carnac' admits to having no family and few friends. Why, if genuine, would such a man publish his account under a pseudonym?

As a literary curio it is worth getting. The nightmare passage where the writer is escorted by demonic figures and comes to his senses perspiring in a muddy field is actually quite scary. Worth buying if you can accept it for what it is; just don't expect any startling revelations.
