Default Davies

Hello Debs. Just found an Edward Davies from Llandrinio. Looks like he was a boot maker in 1881. Can one be discharged in 3 years?

Cheers.

Hi Lynn,

Interesting that you too latched on to Edward Davies as the stand-out name. Might Johnto have been, not a brother, but a brother-in-law?

Regards, Bridewell.

Hi Debra & Lynn

I'll see what I can find out about Dalton & post what I find - if anything. We can work our way through the list between us, I guess?

Regards, Bridewell.

Hi Lynn.
I just checked his full file and Edward was still serving in 1890. His occupation is given as Gentleman's servant. His father's name was Richard Davies, addressgiven as Llandrinio and his wife's name is given as Sarah Davies, she was living at 20 Hunts North Terrace, London.

Thomas Dalton:
born 3rd quarter of 1867 in Llantarnam, Monmouthshire
1871:
Lived on Foundry Row with:
Father: James Dalton Widower, "Coaker"? (sic) born Ireland
Nicholas 19 (can't read occupation)
Mary Ann 16 (too old to be MJK???)
James 9
William 7
Thomas himself 4
Margaret 11

I have a slight query as to why Margaret, aged 11, is last on the list when the other children are in descending order of age. Out of favour? I'm having difficulty in finding the family in 1881, but will post if I find them. Update: I can find a Thomas Daulton, but the father's name is now Nicholas, not James, so I don't see how it can be the same family. Any thoughts?

Regards, Bridewell.

Hi Debs

I think Sarah Davies must have been living at Huntsworth Terrace, St Matthew, St Marylebone - can't find any other likely addresses...

Well done guys, this is splendid stuff. I have been following this, and allied threads with real interest, and although I have no time right now, I will help out tomorrow and do a bit of poking around.

I stated somewhere else on one of these threads that I am certain MJK is Welsh, with Irish origins, so I think this is where we will find her origins.

The Daltons living on Foundry Row is a great find, and one worth investigating.
I don't think that Mary Ann is to old to be considered a possible MJK - it would put her in her early 30s when she was murdered, which is not beyond the realms of possibility, despite what she may have told other people.
Possible reasons that Margaret is out of sequence is that the census taker may have made a mistake, the one answering the questions may have misunderstood what was meant, or she may not 'belong' that family - perhaps visiting, or lived next door. Nothing to get worried about IMO.
