Andrew Firth, Frogg Moody, Mark Ripper and Adam Wood are proud to announce that organisation of next year's East End Conference in London is well underway!

We aim to give delegates an enjoyable weekend of talks and presentations by quality speakers on Jack the Ripper and other East End themed subjects. Plus a chance to catch up with old friends in the heart of the Whitechapel and Spitalfields district. And with 2018 marking the 130th anniversary of the canonical Jack the Ripper murders, we have a few special ideas to mark the occasion!

Check back here, or on our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/370960679931453/ for the latest developments as they unfold!

    Here's to the 2018 conference!

    Very best wishes,

    Andrew Firth (Conference Organiser)

On behalf of my fellow organisers, we are delighted to reveal our next speaker at the 2018 East End Conference taking place this coming November at The Astronomer, Middlesex Street E1.

TRACY I'ANSON will speak on Ripper suspect Jacob Levy, revealing more of her researches which has already seen Jacob confirmed as the cousin of Mitre Square witness Joseph Hyam Levy. Was Jacob Levy the Whitechapel murderer? Join us in November as Tracy explains all.

I'm also personally very pleased to announce that Tracy's book on Jacob Levy, written with her father Neil, will be published by Mango Books and will be launched at the Conference.

Tracy joins fellow speakers Louis Berk, Drew Gray and Philip Hutchinson, and emcee Richard Jones at the eagerly-awaited event. Further speakers will be announced soon.

                    Congratulations to Tracy.

One other point - and I know I keep bringing this up, but.....don't forget Scott's Lifetime Achievement Award.

                      Long overdue.

Thank you guys. But I'm thinking it should go to David Barrat for all of his stellar research and courteous exchanges with folks over the years.

We are pleased to announce out final speaker for the East End Conference this November.

When Chief Inspector Donald Swanson was hand-picked by Commissioner Sir Charles Warren on 15 September 1888 to lead the Scotland Yard investigation into the recent murder of Annie Chapman in Hanbury Street, neither expected the series of Whitechapel murders to continue well into that year and beyond. Swanson was tasked with reviewing all the papers relating to each successive murder by the so-called 'Jack the Ripper' - witness statements, reports from local H Division officers, letters from the public - looking for links and clues to the killer's identity. Each potential lead had to be followed up, with many dead-ends.

The scope of this investigation would not only include the so-called 'canonical five', but also possible victims Alice McKenzie and Frances Coles, as well as the death of Rose Mylett, the attack on Annie Farmer, and the disturbing discovery of a headless torso in a Pinchin Street railway arch.
In his talk "SWANSON AND THE FOUR RIPPERS", Adam Wood will look at Donald Swanson's appointment by Commissioner Warren, and examine three cases which saw the involvement of the detective as part of the Ripper scare in the years 1890-94, which included a letter received from 'Jack the Ripper', the starting point of a long-standing suspect theory, and an assailant who bore a marked resemblance to the man seen with Elisabeth Stride by greengrocer Matthew Packer.

Adam Wood is Executive Editor of Ripperologist magazine, the leading publication on the Whitechapel murders. He is also Editor of the Journal of the Police History Society.

Adam is finalising his biography of the subject of his talk, and SWANSON: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A VICTORIAN DETECTIVE will be published early in 2019. His book TRIAL OF PERCY LEFROY MAPLETON for the official Notable British Trials series will be released in October 2018. Adam is also co-author of SIR HOWARD VINCENT’S POLICE CODE 1889 with Neil RA Bell.
He lives in Warwickshire, where he runs non-fiction publishing house Mango Books.

I always think that Swanson looks like Inspector Japp from Poirot.

Following on from our recent announcement of Adam Wood as our final speaker, here's a message from Adam posted over on Facebook.

"Happy Birthday to Donald Sutherland Swanson, born on this day in 1848.

I’m looking forward to giving a talk about his involvement in the Whitechapel murders investigation this November at the East End Conference."
