  • Who was Mr. Vanderhart?

12th November 1888 Hull Daily Mail

    THE WHITECHAPEL MURDER
    OPENING OF THE INQUEST

This morning Dr. McDonald, M.P., coroner for North-East Middlesex, opened an inquest at Shoreditch Town Hall, on the body of Mary Jeanette Kelly, murdered in Miller’s-court, Dorset-street, Spitalfields, during Thursday night or Friday morning. The jury having been sworn, proceeded to view the body, and afterwards visited the scene of the murder. On their return evidence was taken. The crowd was much smaller than at the inquest of the previous victims. Mr. Vanderhart, represented the Whitechapel Vigilance Committee, and Inspector Abberline was present on behalf of the police.

I can find nothing about this man in any of the ripper books, nor the inquest reports. Anyone have any idea about this man?

    Hi Mike,

He's someone I have been researching for a while, a local socialist.
There are some details on this thread from the forums, the rest of the research is scattered about

    somewhere.

It could be any old spelling, Mike...it's one of those names we dread innit!

I'm more or less certain now that Vanderhaut was the socialist I found details of.
He and his family had lived at various times on fashion street, 26 Dorset St, White's row and Hanbury St so he was very much in the thick of JTR's stalking grounds.
I've also been researching the amateur boxing career and assault charges against one of his sons, and the possibility of him knowing Mccarthy through his Miller's Court address and his boxing connections.

His socialists interests are also interesting to me and his possible associations with lewis Lyons (one of Bachert's socialist enemies!)

The article is weird, because it introduces him, but then doesn't mention him again, but if this is the guy, he seem's very interesting.
          Regards Mike

I hope you are not insinuating I'm a faulty researcher Mike!
I forgot to mention, on the press version I found in 2007 his name appears as vanderhaut.

There's only room for one faulty researcher, and I believe I hold that title.
