Houndsditch-Kate is believed to have walked down this street

on her way to Mitre Square. The church is "St Botolphs Without Aldgate" which stands at the opposite end of Houndsditch to the previous church. Mitre square is just opposite it,reached through a short side street. The picture was taken on a Saturday morning just before Christmas, December 2007

          Great efforts, all.

Chris - where's that awesome BLY shot from? It looks similar to the ones from the Whitby Collection (also 1961).

Jake - What's the source for those slides? I absolutely love them. Just my sort of thing. I have some similar ones which I must get round to posting in time (I'll have to reduce them first).

Important in the case because it was fromthat part of his beat in Leadenhall Street that City PC Watkins entered Mitre street and then Mitre square at 1.44 am and ,just behind Mitre Street in the darkest corner of Mitre Square ,he discovered Kate Eddowes mutilated corpse.

Philip, the Black Lion Yard photo is in the LMA. I think Chris downloaded it from the Moving Here website.

                  Philip,

The market set is from the Eastman Kodak archive. The photographer's name was Chusseau-Flaviens. A Frenchman, obviously.
I remember that there were quite a few London shots (& capitals all over Europe). These marked as "Petticoat Lane" were the only East End ones, though.

                  Remaider of the set:

The location of the next two I'd like to find out. "Petticoat Lane", as we know, could mean any of the adjoining streets - even beyond..

I seem to remember this was touched upon in the latest late boards...but can't remember whether any conclusion was reached. Does "Dakin Bros" or the chimeny stacks at the rear ring any bells?

                    ---

For some reason Natalie's & Chris's pics only show up as links. Why?
Edit: one of mine does the same - but that's because I removed it from the post (it was a duplicate).

                      Jake, they're absolutely awesome.

I have a group of about 10 (square) ones that I bought on eBay early last year. Apparently I've read they were used as sets in a lecture tour about East End poverty. I've made proper jpegs of all of them by using a lit rostra and a light box (the benefits of working at a museum some of the time).

We used a couple of the shots in TLoJtRTaN, being the Harris's Tobacco Shop shot and the one of Itchy Park. As for the others, as I say, I'll put them up here in due course but I suspect many have not been published. I'm fairly certain the two we used in the book hadn't been.

                        Sounds good Philip!

                        Looking forward to it

                        /Jake

PS Nice find(s), Chris! (I'm also referring to the slide on the ebay thread).

Isn't that Old Montague Street? With the entrance to the Chevra Shass Synagogue (No42) just to the right of the woman?

                              Maybe I'm wrong - I've had a bad week.

                                Hi John,

Yes, your absolutely right it is Old Montague Street. I think the entrance to Black Lion Yard was towards the end on the right.
