  • The new Wall Writing photo discovery – a joint statement

    Hello all,

After recent posts on another thread, Rob and I felt the need to issue a statement regarding the photographic discovery of wall writing made within the City of London Polices archives held at Wood Street.

In November 2010 I was granted permission, along with Rob Clack, to conduct research in the City of London Police’s records. This research was to be conducted over a period of time and is for a book Rob and I are working on.

In February 2011, John Bennett and Laura Prieto kindly offered to assist us. It was during this research trip that a photo was discovered of what appeared to be wall writing. The writing was not of what is commonly known as the Goulston Street Graffito, but something else. The photo appears alongside another photo connected to the Whitechapel murders.

We are currently working with the City of London Police in researching this item and we hope to release what we have found in due course, initially in Ripperologist magazine and then with the community as a whole. At that point the full details of what has been discovered, and the events surrounding the discovery, will be made clear.

Whilst we do appreciate the community’s curiosity, we would like to make clear that we were requested to keep this find in confidence by the City of London Police, barring a respected few who are helping us regarding the research (and your co-operation has been greatly appreciated by Rob and myself), and not release it unless requested to do so by them. With this we have complied. We are therefore greatly disappointed to see that this news as been ‘leaked’, and also with the manner it has been leaked. However, we are not naive and do not hold any issue with any party regarding that matter. Sometimes these things happen this way.

As stated, the full account of this discovery will be released to the community, and as it stands at the moment we will not be answering any questions you may have regarding this matter. This is not because of any sinister reasons, but simply because we are trying to avoid potential confusion.

Once the matter is out for all to see, Rob and I will gladly answer any queries you have, should you wish to address them to us. We are trying to do this correctly.

    Your understanding is greatly appreciated.

    Regards
    Neil Bell & Robert Clack

        Thank you Ally,

We hope to bring it to everyone as soon as possible.

As stated, the choice to hold was not ours. Believe me, we were equally frustrated.

Thank you Chris, and everyone else.

Yes, we shall endeavour to present it properly, with research, which can properly be debated across all forums and mediums.
