  • Memory plate on crime scenes ?

    Hi all,
when i was in Durward St this winter, I 've seen a small plate reading
    Mary Ann Nichols
    1845-1888
    murdered here

and on some picts of St James passage, seems there was a sign like that...

Did each scene had, one day or another, such memory plates ?
Are there any pictures somewhere ?

    Thank's

    Hi Gene

Somebody put up those signs some years ago. More precisely it reads, "Mary Ann Nichols Row 1845-1888." See here. There is or was a sign for Eddowes also, reading "Catherine Eddowes Square 1842-1888."

I was in Mitre Square in January and did not notice any Eddowes sign.

            Catherine Eddowes Square

It's not a sign as such; it looks like someone cut out a mask and sprayed it on to the wall. It was beneath the Cass Child & Family Centresign, but may have been washed off since. They have pictures of it on flickr, or just google it.

Just to clarify, there have been two types of these markers over the last few years.

The first batch were the stencilled street names (Mary Ann Nichols Row, Annie Chapman Street etc.) which appeared near all five canonical sites about 4 or 5 years ago. I think the only one remaining is the Eddowes one and maybe Stride.

The second lot were rather finely crafted plaster or wood plaques like the one in the photo above. They popped up about a year r so ago, though there didn΄t appear to be one for Kelly or Stride, however. The Nichols plaque, stuck high on the board school, appears to be still there from what I last heard.

The streets could be renamed for them. They do it for councillors.

There was one on the flower bed in Mitre square, it was missing the last time I looked, doesn't matter now as the square is , by the look of things, about to be destroyed once and or all, the builders are in!
