  • Barnett in 1891 census

    Hi,
The phrase 'Be Gentle with me' springs to mind as I am hardly a Chris Scott when it comes down to research, however a hour or so of yours truelys time ,has revealed mayby ,something positive in the 1891 census.
I had always assumed that after 1888, Joseph Barnett vanished, and no matches occured that pointed his way were in the census, however look over the following.
I must state now, some of you may say 'Thats old hat' but I have never seen this,
Joseph Barnett .. Born approx 1861 occupation Costermonger[ crossed out to Hawker] born Whitechapel.
Wife.. Flora, born Whitechapel approx 1862.
Children Alice 7days old. born 1891
    Julia aged 2years born 1889,
David aged five years born 1886.
At the time of that census they were living at 8, Brady street, dwellings whitechapel.
There were only three Joseph Barnetts in that area which could be considered, and this man is by far the obvious.
    Look at the following .
Two of his children were born after the whitechapel murders, the other born a year before a man called Barnett moved in with Kelly.
Is it not possible that Mary kellys Barnett moved in with her after a break up with the marriage, and returned afterwards, also note the 1891 census address, 8 Brady street dwellings, Whitechapel, the very street Nichols ventured down on the 31st august, before being slain in Bucks Row..
    Note.
I am not setting out to accuse Barnett as a suspect by introducing this thread, just my first attempt[ ashamed to admit] in research mode.
    Regards Richard,
    .

As far as I know its never been confirmed or completely rejected, but some newspapers reported a young boy living with Kelly prior to the murder. Could this be a 2 year old 'David' Barnett?

      Hi, '
I would love to say 'Yes', however the age does not not suggest that, yet again the whole details surrounding that time are so confusing who knows?
The fact is we are so many light years down the line, that we can only summise possible scenerios.
      Regards Richard.

Why is this Joe Barnett-specific thread under "General Discussions", rather than on that part of the board dedicated to Joe Barnett? (You'll find it here: http://forum.casebook.org/forumdisplay.php?f=23)

Sorry, but you know what I'm like

          Hi Sam, '
You are correct of course, it was just that I headlined it under 'Census' so to speak, that i Forwarded it under General Discussion , but as it refers to Barnett, it should obvious been under Barnett, another schoolboy error,
          Richard.

                Richard,

I think you've got the wrong Joe Barnett, mate! You're not the first to make this mistake - cf: Paul Harrison's book 'Jack The Ripper - The Mystery Solved'.

'Our' Joe Barnett (who also called himself Kelly when it suited him, I believe) is fairly well-documented. He lived in various addresses all over the East End, apparently. After the Ripper Murders he stayed local, eventually moving to Shadwell where he lived with his common-law wife Louisa and died in 1927. Bruce Paley's excellent book 'Jack The Ripper - The Simple Truth' is well worth a read.

Someone on another thread recently remarked that a lot of questions can easily be answered by reaching for the A-Z, the one absolute necessity for those interested in the Ripper.

                Sam,

You're right - this ought to be in the 'Suspects' thread. Any idea how it can be moved?

                Cheers,

                Graham

                  Hello Graham,
Natually expect to be wrong, I obviously am well aware of Paleys, Harrisons, publicatioins, they are among my collections, also 'Will the real Mary kelly' excellent work by our own Chris Scott.
I was attempting to find a Joseph Barnett which appeared in the 1891 census, of approx age, occupation and of the Whitechapel area, as all the others have failed to do so, and Barnett simply dissapeared after the inquest .
                  Regards Richard.
