  • Diary Quirks

It's already been noted that the Diary author makes quirky use of the pronoun "I". Here's a list of examples for the record:

"They will suffer just as I"

"They deserve that at least from I"

"It is the whoring bitch to blame not I"

"I imagined my heart bouncing along the street with I in desperation following it"

    "so young unlike I"

"too dangerous for I to return"

There is another quirk to which I would like to draw attention and that is the use of the word "within", when others might have used the simpler "in". Examples of these are:

"It shall be, before long, on every persons lips within the land."

"Within my fright I imagined my heart bounding along the street"

"I will be in Manchester within a few days."

"Throw it deep within the river."

I don't want to say any of these are actually wrong, it's just a bit quirky.

    For completeness, we also have:

"I can feel the strength building up within me."

"I am fighting a battle within me."

They are probably quite normal (although some might prefer to use "inside") and there's absolutely nothing unusual about "Within the quarter of the hour I found another dirty bitch willing to sell her wares."

Does anyone know anyone connected with the Diary who uses the pronoun in the same way and also has a fondness for the word "within"?

Nitpicking perhaps but these two examples are grammatically correct.

"They will suffer just as I [have suffered]"

"It is the whoring bitch to blame not I [who is to blame]"

If I may nitpick in return, it would be to point out that I didn't say that any of the examples are grammatically incorrect, only that they reveal a quirk of the Diary's author; although to nitpick further I appreciate that you haven't actually claimed that I said that any of the examples are grammatically incorrect!

Those passages give the impression of a good storyteller who is trying to sound posh.
My opinion is all I have to offer here,

        Dave.

        Smilies are canned laughter.

You are correct in the latter. I worked on the assumption that you would inevitably know them to be grammatically correct but equally hated the possibility that others may not. Sad of me, but true. Or is it sad of I? Ho ho.
