  • Hi David,

Don't worry, I will never expect you to do any thinking for me.

It strikes me that Henry Matthews might have wanted to keep on top of this scare that was gripping the world.

Or was he simply content to while away the parliamentary recess with "Jack," the retriever who failed to retrieve, at Little Green, near Petersfield, Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby's house on the borders of Sussex and Hampshire, which in August he had taken for three months?

To have left his concern until the eleventh hour does seem a little tardy.

    Regards,

    Simon

Exactly. And you have proved it.. because you cannot spell his name correctly either. The name "José" is spelt using an "é" ..not an "e". Two completely different letters.

I however, can. So in order to correct a mistake..

It is José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix

Just accentuating the full name.... from memory.

        • Hi DJA,

At a glance, I guess it was this guy.

Sir Geoffrey Thomas Phipps Hornby GCB, who died in 1895.

          Regards,

          Simon

              Worked it out and deleted.
Brain has been on holidays. CFS/ME.

Bit curious about Henry Matthews possible sexual orientation.
Single, successful, rich and not exactly ugly, yet never married.

Although unrelated,I do suspect that the Jack the Ripper Case was "covered up",as was The Cleveland Street Scandal.

                • Hi DJA,

I must admit it has occurred to me that Henry Matthews may have been a little light on his feet.

                  • >> ... they all offered differing versions of the grammar and spelling<<

Excepting the vague chance that Bruce Robinson is right, I always lean to Warren's version being the most accurate. He was an exacting man by nature and he knew the importance of and had experience in accurately transcribing messages on walls accurately.

And here is PC Long's rendition from his 6th November report.

                          Simon,

Thanks for posting this. I see three strange flaws in the writing. The "J" does not look like a J. And the second letter after the alleged "J" looks like a "c". Also in the word "men" the lower case n looks like a y. Maybe he was drunk when he wrote this as well. This writing does not match his signature at all.

                            • I read it as "The Icues, are the mey that will not be blamed for nothing."

Definite comma after the second word, and an apparent "y" at the end of "men" -- very strange transciption.

You are wrong Phil, I can spell his first name correctly but simply couldn't be bothered to find the right symbol on the keyboard because it wasn't the point I was making. The point was actually proved by the fact that I had to google his surname in order to check I was spelling it correctly.
