  • Who is Lipski?

This postcard arrived during Abberline's last case involving the Great Bond Robbery.

Anyone have an idea on whether this refers to the Batty Street Lipski or if it refers to another person with that nickname (note the date of 1892)? Walter Selwen also used a few more aliases, one being Retlaw Newles which is his first and last name spelled backwards.

Indulge an old man. Who was Walter Selwen?
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

      Hi Bridewell,

Generally, just a con man dealing in bonds. Abberline gained notoriety for his arrest of Selwyn in Paris after stealing a large sum of Turkish bonds.

          Is that an astrakhan collar?
          Kind regards, Sam Flynn

            Gareth,

It does look like an astrakhan collar.

Unfortunately, he was sentenced to 18 months hard labor in February of 1888 for a fraud and deception charge under the name, Edward Fairchild.

Yeah, he even has the turned up at the ends moustache.

I'm still wondering why he used Lipski and Abberline in the same phrase? "Give my regards..." sounds like both men are still alive. It made me wonder if he was referring to some else in Scotland Yard as Lipski? The postcard was sent to Detective Inspector Stroud at the Vine Street Station.
