Perhaps the apparently incongruous details make this photo more likely to be genuine? Who'd have thought of Billy the Kid playing croquet?

Could that be a possible reason for him trying the game, if the owner played it?

Well, let's see...Billy was shot by Pat Garrett in Arizona in 1881, and supposedly killed. Most of his targets were people in the opposition of the Lincoln County War (an interesting subject in itself). He was not known to hate prostitutes, nor to kill with a knife (he was known as a really fast gunfighter). Sure, why not say he was Jack. He also (as he is playing croquet here) travelled back in time to the late 1700s and wrote the politically harsh series of letters as "Junius" as well. Note the two pseudonyms "Junius" and "Jack" begin with a "J". There may be something there.

Billy he kid was born Henry McCarty in NY city. He started going by William Bonney some time after his first kill, probably because he was on the run. He was also known as William Antrim, his stepfathers last name occasionally, and Kid Antrim before being more commonly called Billy the Kid.

There is only one other known picture of him-a portrait of him and its pretty good. So I don't know how they are gonig to verify the Croquet picture as him since it is at distance.

I can't understand Abby why the whole bunch of them are playing croquet! Baseball was the growing popular sport at the time. Or even pitching pennies. I'm surprised someone isn't bringing them tea and water crest sandwiches or scones - hell even cricket would have been far better than croquet!

Actually the article said his name was William McCarthy, though the name "William H. Bonney" is usually given as his real name.

It is interesting. Funny to think of Billy playing croquet (of all games) but why not? I actually hope it is proved to be genuine. But it is a risky thing about discovering photographs of famous events or people that have never been shown before. There is a photo of the moment war on Serbia was declared in July 1914 in Vienna, and Hitler is in the center of the huge crowd cheering. This picture has been reproduced many times, but recently some expert actually questioned if the Hitler image was a part of the actual photo or superimposed some point after 1933 when he was an international figure.
