I live in the beautiful Hunter Valley.

But work takes me to Sydney and even Melbourne a fair bit.

The only good bit about Sydney is it's where I board cruise ships.

I've read Robert Hughes' book about the founding of Australia as a penal colony, and I remember his discussions of that prison Norfolk Island. Has the island been turned into any kind of a museum?

Yes and No Jeff.

In that tourism as basically one big museum is probably the man income, they have tried to maintain some of the old buildings and the cemetery is a bit of an eye opener. But it also has a lot of residents not involved directly in tourism, however I suspect that they would have a grim old time without the tourists and those who make a living out of tourism.

For a long time it also offered duty free shopping but a few years ago they introduced a sales tax that lost that benefit.

It is a delightful island quiet and peaceful, and the residents are very friendly, a friend of mine was Chief Justice for a while, but that only entailed visiting a couple of times a year.

In terms of prison museums I'd suggest that Port Arthur in Tasmania is the way to go, my wife's PhD concentrated on the childrens prison at Port Arthur and the one in Sydney.
