Hold on! Jon Jonzz (I think) the Martian Manhunter. He didn;t have his own book, but he was equal to Superman and had no weakness really and he was green, so maybe one of the first minority characters. I really liked him and the Silver Surfer... but Doc Strange is still the best because of the monsters he fought.

I had NO idea Superman was the very first superhero ever. Is that a fact? What I like about Superman is his undilluted innocence, plus I adore Chris Reeve, both as an actor and as a person. Such a shame he died. (Plus I've always wondered if something like that might not happen to me too, as my speciality in freestyle snowboarding is big air, crushing from 5-7m/15-20 ft high. :-))
Superman is not all powerful, he's got the cryptonite problem. What makes him dull is that he's all good all the time vs. showing some edge. That's why I enjoyed the movie Superman III as a kid, where he briefly became bad (though that sequel was pretty shitty otherwise).
What I also find very lame is Lois Lane – her failing to recognize him without his glasses, her always ending up needing to be rescued...yawn.
Superman is oftentimes known by the nickname "The big boy scout." I also love Christopher Reeves' portrayal of him- it went down in cinematic history. Such a tragedy how he died. Brandon Routh played the character a few years ago in "Superman Returns"- not a bad movie, but it didn't leave a memorable impression. A new version is now in the works, with Brit Henry Cavill playing Superman in "The Man of Steel" due out some time in 2012.
And by the way- if you were to delve into comics of the past few years you will see that Lois Lane is no longer in the dark as to Superman's identity and that she is now married to Clarck Kent with full knowledge of who and what he is.

The Avengers don't appeal to me so much. The chick is kinda lame. I hear Joss Whedon's doing an Avengers show though, and I might be interested in checking it out.

Have been reading a lot of graphic novels lately catching up on the history of Green Arrow and Green Lantern. I highly reccomend them for all you sci-fi fans out there because for heroes based on Earth they are best friends who become involved in some incredibly complex cosmic situations that are anything but kid stuff. They're quite dark, in fact. Green Arrow relies purely on finely honed human skill, while Green Lantern is in touch with forces that can crack planets in half, yet they share adventures on equal ground and both have been dead for long periods and come back to life, bringing in incredible spiritual and supernatural elements to their story as well. (Comic book death is rarely permanent, actually, but still- check these out!)

The Avengers vs. The Justice League-
Anyone care to cast a vote? Which do you prefer?
The Avengers (Marvel Comics)- A government sponsored project, including Iron Man, Thor, The Hulk, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. And others, but that's the roster in their upcoming summer 2012 movie.
Justice League (DC Comics)- No government involvement but a private organization, featuring Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Aquaman, etc. etc.
I prefer the League, but both are teams made up of big egos in which personality clashes are inevitable.

How does everyone rate Superman? He was the very first of course, and his mythology is captivating- the last survivor of a doomed planet, sent off in a spaceship as an infant as Krypton explodes out from under his sadly embracing parents. Cut to- Smallville, Kansas, Earth, and a poor childless farm couple finds a baby that's literally fallen out of the sky! I think the best Superman stories are those in which Clarck Kent/Superman deals with his emotions about where he comes from. But as a superhero, does anyone think he's just too powerful to the point of being ridiculous?
I do really enjoy the several stories in which he co-stars with Batman, though. They have a long-standing friendship, and even in their costumes they refer to each other as Clarck and Bruce.

Can only repeat myself :-), I like Darth Vader and Faith Lehane – totally similar characters.
Salut de Paris, David. Et ton bar, il marche bien?

You’re showing signs of a misspent youth Michael.
No wonder you ended up chasing 1888 villains.

Dr. Strange was the best because he fought Cthuloid kinds of creatures and I loved his All-Seeing Eye of Agamotto (sp?). I liked the Shadow too. Hated Batman, though I do give some credit to DC for changing his image albeit too late in comic book history.
I liked the original X-Men too and was dismayed when it all changed in the late 70s. Favorite super villain was Black Bolt, though in my mind he was more of a hero.
Son of Satan was a great character too for as long as he lasted as well as Warlock.

My all time superhero is The Doctor.....a 900-odd year old madman Alien Timelord (possibly half-human on his mothers side) who can regenerate and flies around all of time and space in a wooden blue police box that is bigger on the inside.
And my villains? Well that could only be the Daleks.
I love Matt Smiths doctor.....almost as much as I love Karen Gillans Amy Pond.

Yes, George Reeves! And he had a similar name to Chris Reeve.
Another favorite of mine is Melaka Fray (from the Joss Whedon comic), the reluctant vampire slayer/thief living in a dystopian far future, a bit reminiscent of Dark Angel.
Interesting that Errata likes Echo from Dollhouse, played by Eliza Dushku, like my favorite hero-villain character from BtvS, Faith Lehane. About a month ago I bought both Dollhouse seasons on DVD (the TV series didn't play in Europe) and have watched it only once so far, and not sure if I like it yet. I've got a couple of the DVDs along now that I'm travelling and wanna show them to some friends here. Actually you kinda reminded me, Errata!
