That Johnny Cash version, I must confess, I'd not heard before...it's actually in my opinion far better than the original (Vaughan Monroe?) version...but the Rawhide theme I don't think you could possibly improve upon...It was such a good show too ... but alas those were the innocent days of my youth, and it's possible that nostalgia clouds my judgement there!

Satchmo pulled it's teeth and rendered it only a jazzy little tune -the sort of thing that you might enjoy on a pleasant Sunday lunchtime in a nice gastro pub. Nothing to frighten the horses.

Marianne's version is much more faithful to the original Brecht lyrics and is darker, nastier, and more atmospheric. The first time that I heard it was on the radio, when I was snoozing in bed on a lazy morning...I sat bolt upright, and shivered...

Marianne's version was blacker...and obligingly bleaker...but I have this gut feeling Brecht had a nicely twisted sense of humour...which Mr Armstrong very dryly captured...hence my preference...

But hey ho...it's all a matter of taste...

I don't like the fact that the American versions of Mac the Knife, using the Satchmo lyrics, have completely done away all the references to whores and the 7 children burned to death. MacHeath is one evil psychopath, but you never get that from the American versions...

Although strictly an advent hymn it's probably the oldest surviving Christmas song or carol, with lyrics that may well date back into the 9th century...

I'm so glad you enjoyed that Latin version of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel."

I found it very moving too. I once heard a radio documentary on NPR (America's nonprofit National Public Radio) that included a rendition of this song done as a Gregorian Chant. But I didn't know it went back as far as the 9th Century Dave; thanks for that.

Here's another wonderful Christmas song; it's little Jackie Evancho singing 'O Holy Night' live at the Lighting of the National Christmas Tree celebration in WA DC in 2010. She was only 10 years old! Her voice is so pure and angelic, just stunning.
