The return of the Jedi had the cool, operatic redemption-scene (with a new actor, Sebastian Shaw, for Darth Vader).

John Carpenter's Halloween is the best modern horror film. Zombie's is the worst.
Just this weekend I tried to watch The Big Chill and couldn't. Maybe it made sense in 1983, but I thought it was extremely boring. And this is coming from a guy who absolutely loves The Piano and Remains of the Day.
I think the Die Hard films are overrated. And Shrek, and any kid's movie, really. They virtually all suck.
I think Angelina Jolie is very overrated, and Keanu Reeves' success remains a great American mystery.
Yours truly,
Tom Wescott

Yes, I totally agree! Back to the future 2 easily equals the first film. Almost everyone I know thinks The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film. I'm ashamed to admit that I prefer The Return of the Jedi.Originally posted by mariab View PostAbsolutely. Pirates of the Carribean. The first one was enjoyable, the others were utter tripe. No amount of hype was ever going to help.
The 'first' Star Wars chapters. Rubbish.
Indiana Jones - the latest one - so bad I can't even remember what it was called! Dire.

Wow, cool thread!
I like The big chill, and I have yet to see Citizen Cane in its entirety.
I adore sports films, but Chariots of fire was the worst turkey ever. And its music theme was super annoying.
I agree with Abby that Steve Martin is really good playing the uptight/anal/neurotic guy.
Most overated female actresses: Mia Farrow, Diane Keaton (apart from her performance in Looking for Mr Goodbar)
Most overated male actors: Al Pacino, Henry Fonda (the rest of his family can act circles around him)
Most overated directors: Steven Spielberg (apart from Jaws and Saving private Ryan), Jean-Luc Godard (after his first films, which were true jewels), Andrei Zulawski
most internationally recognized and super promoted bad actress: Julia Roberts
internationally despised execrable actress: Meg Ryan
actresses who overplay: Jessica Lange, Faye Dunaway, Jodie Foster (of late)
Maybe someone should create a thread about underated very good actors?

I like Halloween but none of the sequels, in fact, Halloween II is so bad that it almost ruins the original.
Pretty Woman is one we all agree on it appears. Going by the title, it's somewhat miscast as well.

Halloween
Pulp Fiction...splendid original adult entertainment that has not been bettered.
ET...An eternal fairy story for children of all ages.
THe Big Chill. Well you've not lived. One of the all time greats.
Do The Right Thing. You obviously don't understand modern politics in American. Watch it again as a double bill with Boyz 'n' The Hood to get both sides of the story from black American film makers.
The others you mention
Halloween. Oh well each to their own. Overrated...NO.
Pretty Woman...I agree...dreadful.
A Beautiful Mind.. perhaps a flawed decent film. Overrated.... NO.

Steadmund Brand Twelve Points.Originally posted by Steadmund Brand View PostI have to agree with Derrick here, what people today do not realize is that Wells changed the way films were made and how films looked with Kane (well with the help of Greg Toland the brilliant cinematographer) just the use of deep focus alone was ground breaking, but add that with the fact that almost every single scene in the film is a special effect... well just amazing, now the story doesnt hold up so well today as times have changed so much, but the film itself, like I said changed film forever....
Now on to the topic..... can someone, anyone please explain to me why people find Will Ferrell funny, hey may very well be the most unfunny man I have ever seen.....Ok I'll stop now as I really don't like to be negative on the forums.. but that is a question I must ask.

HelloOriginally posted by Derrick View PostHi John
I agree wholeheartedly with your choices of Steve Martin and Robin Williams.
Steve Martin made some very good films in the late 70's early 80's such as:- The Jerk
- All Of Me
- Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid
- The Man With Two Brains
- Sieze The Day
- The World According To Garp
- Good Will Hunting
- One Hour Photo
- Insomnia
I disagree over Bicentennial Man...that was just the same old Williams nonsense. I would vote Mrs Doubtfire over that crap and that wasn't a lot to write to home about.
Don't agree over Tommy Cooper. I only have to look at the bloke and I start laughing. That to me is comic genius. Although I do the same thing when I see David Cameron. So you could be right.
Derrick
Steve Martin was also excellent in Planes, Trains and Automobiles (playing the uptight/anal/snobby foil to the immortal John Candy's lovable shlub loser).
Also, I pretty much agree that in film Robin Williams is better in dramas. Check out his part (small) in Dead Again-brilliant.

And again, I do respect your opinion and am not trying to change that..just want to point out what makes it the special film it gets credit for.
