  • New Batman movie

Hey everyone, since Ripperologists are often drawn to rather dark works of fiction, and since Jack the Ripper and the superhero Batman were once paired in the graphic novel "Gotham by Gaslight," I wonder if anyone is as excited as me about the upcoming third installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman triolgy, now revealed to be titled "The Dark Knight Rises" and scheduled to debut July 20, 2012. After "Batman Begins" and the huge success of "The Dark Knight" with Heath Ledger winning the posthumous Oscar and all, Nolan has kept fans on edge by releasing just little tidbits of info on the third film, which has caused a torrent of online rumors and speculations.

Confirmed facts- The title and tentative release date of the third film, that Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman will all be returning, that British actor Thomas Hardy has been cast as somebody (but exactly who is still a mystery), that the Riddler will not be featured as many had suspected, and that the story will finish Batman's story in Nolan's eyes and will focus on "a female villain and a love interst for Bruce Wayne." That's how it was worded. The villain and the love interest therefore may be two different women, or the same person.

Rumor and speculation- In "The Dark Knight," when Bale had Freeman design him a new batsuit and asked him how it would stand up against attack by dogs and Freeman said "Should do fine against cats," everyone assumed it was a clue that Catwoman/Selina Kyle is next. And rumors of everyone from Lindsey Lohan to Angelina Jolie to Cher have made the rounds for playing her. Much talk of the Riddler was also bandied about with Johnnie Depp as the prime contender, and speculation that with these films leaning toward realism he might be portrayed much like the Zodiac killer. Well, now the Riddler's out but a new round of actresses for Nolan's "female villain and love interest," whether they are one or two characters, is supposedly coming from the usual "reliable source" as being in talks with Nolan right now. There are six of them- Rachel Weisz, Blake Lively, Keira Knightley, Naomi Watts, Ann Hathaway, and Natalie Portman. People are also speculating- is it Catwoman, or is it some other female villain such as Talia al Ghul, who was indeed both an enemy and a lover of Batman in the comic since her father Ras al Ghul was already featured in the first movie played by Liam Neeson.

Personally, I think a lot of fans are expecting Catwoman and will be let down if it's not her. But regardless, it is supposed to start filming this coming spring and I think it's going to be a spectacular movie, even though whoever the villain is will have some very big and daunting shoes to step into to live up to Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker. I'm a huge Batman fan and I can't wait! Anyone else have any thoughts on the new movie? Or if not, just tell me to go hang out with my geeky fanboy friends.
