For ages now I thought I was the only Within Temptation fan in the UK.every time I extoll their brilliance to others all I get back is "who?".Sharon Den Adel has the most amazing voice,in my opinion.
Their version of "Running Up That Hill" is amazing, and I speak as someone who thought that attempting to cover it was sacrilege.

Have you ever heard "After Forever"? Very similar sound, and also Dutch.

I think After Forever and Floor Jansen were excellent but I've been told they have now called it a day, pity. I get quite jealous of the European music scene as in UK everything is dominated by bland insipid pop (unless you listen to Kerrang). So many outstanding bands from the continent though especially female fronted bands like Epica,Leaves Eyes,Xandria and Sirenia, not to mention The Gathering and Anneke Van Geisbergens new project Aqua De Annique

Wow.. there are so many to choose from...lets say

        Anything by The Beatles
Anything by The Who (well... maybe not It's Hard... but we'll let that slide)
        Anything by Be-Bop Deluxe
I would say about 85-90% of Frank Zappa's work
Everything The Kinks did (well until UK Jive anyway)
Anything Alice Copper did between 1968-1979
.... wow.. i guess i am starting to sound old eh? ok.. lets go with some more recent stuff....

well.. i'll stay with Liverpool and go with all of Ladytrons stuff.....under rated (In America anyway) and the first 2 White Stripes albums

Need some info for some little work I'm currently doing about the Kemper case.
And since I was too young....I'd like to know what did young people listen in the early seventies...

            This might help:

You can move forward year by year to get what you're looking for.

              Many thanks Magpie.
"Year by year" makes it most useful for my purpose.

Good call.. ELO was a great band i'll give you that... I was also always a big Alan Parsons fan, and was lucky enough to see their one and only tour...see it's so hard to pick just a few albums.. or even bands.. everytime I read a response I remeber that i missed some......

great lists we have going here, and look foward to reading more

Interesting results for the Finnish Metal Awards this year:

                    Band of the year: Insomnium
Record of the year: Insomnium - Across The Dark
Vocalist of the year: Tomi Joutsen (Amorphis)
Musician of the year: Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom)

I haven't actually heard Insomnium yet--I'll have to get on that.

They were pretty good--fast, but intelligible.

                          Rock is boring.
Except Eddy Cochran and the Guana Batz.
