Charles Frederick France was born Frederick Charles Franz in 1919 in the Pancras area. Charles and some of his siblings changed their surname, presumably because it sounded German. Most chose France, but one brother used a variation of his middle name - Sidney Stewart Franz became Sidney Stuart.
