  • Hello Gut,

A good local, independent, bookshop should be able to order it in for you.
There is a New York bookshop, called "The Strand" that offers free postage to Oz. It might be worth checking with them.

I must be an Aussie thing, because I hate Kindle too. That said, I have downloaded several kindle formatted books to my iPad.

I'm no Luddite I'm usually the first person my work colleagues call on for technical advice, I just hate reading online, I love to make notes as I go and am not comfortable reading on screen, I'm hoping my local bookkeeper can get it n the next few weeks, he's chasing t for me, but a $14 book and $13 postage just rubbish.

      • Hello GUT,

Preaching to the converted here! I love the pick up and feel of books.
I love the smell of books.

(Actually I'll amend that, I hate the smell of new books lately, to the point I had one book recently that couldn't read until the awful chemical smell dissipated, which took about a month of being left open in an airy space.)

        Back to waxing lyrical.

I love the way books decorate my walls. I love the way they are stacked in piles. All my life I dreamed of having my own library in my own house. Now I'm an old fart, I finally got it and I LOVE it.

e-books are handy in the fact that you can walk around with a hundred books, but they just plain ain't fun.

        • Maybe kindle could add the musty old book smell.

And yeah ain't a library just grand mine just need to be about 10 x bigger because the books just breed. Fair dinkum we don't buy 'em they just appear out of nowhere.

Then you gotta go out and but more bookcases.

Then find somewhere to put them in the house.

          Bloody books!

          • I was just researching online and sure enough the paperback won't be appearing on the Amazon site in Australia. It might show up in due course in Canada. Amazon doesn't have printing or warehouse facilities in Australia it seems.

Yes you did, and thanks a million Graeme. Simon Wood and a fellow I'm not even familiar with (R. Coker) were also kind enough to leave good reviews for the book.

I normally tell my wife, "It followed me back home, can I keep it?"

                  • Love that old book smell

There's actually a good reason to sniff old books, there is a mold that appears on them and is actually hallucinogenic. So start sniffing and enjoy.

Hi Tom. Wow! I loved the book. I posted a review on Amazon. Can hardly wait to see some of the discussions on the message boards.

Hi Greg, thanks for that. I look forward to reading your review. The new issue of Rip is out today and Paul Begg gave it a good review as well, which is quite humbling. Also a little surprising considering I'm mailing him his free review copy tomorrow.

No, it ain't just an Aussie thing.
The other day I was saying much the same thing, that I don't like e-books (Kindle), but there was one feature I liked, I just couldn't think what it was.

So today I was reading one of the threads that brought up that issue of Kelly's clothes being "folded on a chair".
I thought, if any book might carry the source for that phrase it should be Bruce Paley's, The Simple Truth, but years ago I misplaced the book, so recently I had ordered it on Kindle.
Now, there is no way in hell any publisher is going to put words like "folded" and "chair" in an index, so if I read it in a book I would have to search the whole damn thing page by page.

Not so with kindle, every single word is searchable...

This was the feature that I liked, that I couldn't think of, and its the only thing.

Alas, Paley doesn't appear to mention this phrase either.
                          Regards, Jon S.

I actually said the same thing earlier that whilst I hate on computer reading its one benefit is the search function. I actually use it extensively professionally, just I really don't regard Jack the Ripper as professional.

The wikipedia article on Mary Kelly cites Marriott, Trevor (2005). Jack the Ripper: The 21st Century Investigation. pp. 167–180, London: John Blake. ISBN 1-84454-103-7 for her clothes being folded on a chair. I don't have my copy to hand right now, but I'm almost certain that I recall seeing that claim made in Rumbelow as well.

Just wondering if your article in the Ripperologist purposefully coincided with the release of the book or if this is just a happy coincidence? I somewhat expect that I will see you making the talk-show circuit next week!

                                Keep up the great work!!!
