I am not restricting myself to any particular period - it is just that 1850(ish) is the earliest to which I have access in terms of fairly extensive records
The Manton airman case I had heard of and there are many legends have grown up around it
In its day another famous one was the Ellington park murder case but that goes back to the 17th century

That is indeed the one. I am reliably informed that details can be found in a history of Manston airport currently available from the B.O.B Memorial... So now I have another excuse to go look at the spitfire. Cheers all.
