Only if we accept Barnett's version(s) of events, Jon, but I tend to think otherwise. A number of accounts infer that Kelly's recent streetwalking activities extended way beyond the ten or so days since Barnett's departure. If so, it's likely that she prostituted herself when Barnett was at work, or even whilst supposedly 'visiting friends' in other districts. Since she also had a longstanding reputation amongst customers at the Britannia as having been a volatile, hard-drinking woman of the town, I incline to the view that Barnett's somewhat romanticized depiction of Kelly was based more on wishful thinking than factual characterization.

    Robert,
I know Vitton for its extremely expensive handbags and suitcases -- don't own any myself, but have friends who do. Or perhaps the knockoffs! Can just imagine something of that quality being burned in Kelly's room.

I'm sure she could marry Albert Victor, but she liked too much Barnett's scent after a most successful day at Billingsgate.

    Agreed,

I'm sure she knew more than a few Joes, Johns, and Jameses.

I don't think she would have had any trouble getting clients if that is a measure of success. If we recall she had not been on the game for several months, at least while Barnett lived with her, and Kelly had been seen with various men on Thursday night if reports are accurate. The trouble is, these women spent what they earned as soon as they got it. If they didn't it could be taken from them.
Setting aside a little money for a rainy day, or for her future was distinctly out of the question.

    Hi Jon,

of course, the fact she could have more clients than Annie Chapman can't be called a "success". Idem for the room. She rent it with Barnett...an awful little thing in the worst street of London, and she had even troubles to pay the rent.

It's completely meaningless to point out that she was "more successful" than the other victims. She was not. She was only younger. At one time or another, she would have ended up in a common lodging house, one suspects.

Malcolm -if you weren't a bit too young, I'd suspect you of topping her......

I bet the killer burnt a Vuitton in the grate.
Who is surprised if Dorset was so crowded that day ? They were there for looting.

Absolutely, Malcolm. But for some she was Grace Kelly.

The idea that Kelly was successful because she rent a room in the worst street of London amuses me to no ends.

    Thanks for that, Ruby.

MJK was definitely not successful, she was not even smart enough to be a criminal, she fell over a period of time from grace and ended up in Millers court.. probably due to continual unemployment and drinking, she and all the others, were downtrodden street rats!

Mary Kelly would have been a street whore only, her boyfriends compared to her would have been rich, but not that rich, because Joe Barnett couldn't afford to fix her window or the door lock etc, so something wasn't right there as well, but he sounds like a waste of space anyway, finally if he did have money, what the hell was he doing letting her live there, why not rent a house around the corner.

so it sounds like they had money but were still poor, but he definitely didn't love her that much, because i would refuse to let my girlfriend live in a dunp like that, i would beg, steal or borrow to get her out of there, MJK was abandoned, but there is one thing that puts off all men and that's a woman that Drinks heavily, steals and has affairs behind your back/ prostitute.

maybe Joe had the money but simply gave up on her, because i would too.... maybe they all gave up on her, simply left her to rot... he probably realised that this woman wasn't someone that he could spend the rest of his life with, so he just let the relationship die off and started to visit her only occassionally, still liked her yes and felt sad about it too, but not foolish enough to waste money on her, not without seeing her trying to improve her life first !

they had no social welfare, no JSA, no NHS, no home improvement loans/allowances and finally on top of that, no money for food, clothing and the Rent.....being out of work back then meant that MJK was better off dead, because life wasn't worth living.

    er....who said that ?

When referring to Blotchy, I put the word 'admirer' in inverted commas for a reason.

It is laughable to suggest that Mary had only two men in her life when she died. I personally wouldn't even include Fleming as part of her life when she was killed (he was an 'ex').

For all we know, there were only two guys in her life : a fish porter recently fired out and a plasterer dossing nearby
    .

Well, she had so many 'admirers' that she was referred to as a prostitute, had rows with Joe Barnett over her prostitution, Blotchy apparently 'admired'
her enough to come round late at night with a pail of beer, and nobody
defended her reputation when Hutchinson asserted that she picked up Astro Man in the street and took him home.

If she couldn't pay the rent, it's because she spent the money she earned on things other than her rent.
