    birth record

Hello Colin. Having a devil of a time finding his birth record. (Tried both Henry and James.) Limerick was a no go.

There are three James Kelly's in Tipperary born 1868. But they come up as Dublin North.

Have you located his birth record?

    Cheers.

      Hi Bridewell

Good find. Have you looked at similar Scottish regiments, the Royal Scots Fusiliers for example.

      Regards

In the Service Record, are you able to read the name in line 2. "in the Parish of"?
        Hi Jon,

Ancestry list it as "St Bridget's" which I think is probably right.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.

I know that people, especially Chris Scott, have looked at the 1871 and 1881 censuses but if MJK WAS lying about her age (or JB honestly made a mistake either in hearing or in math) and she was a bit older than 25, has anyone checked the 1861 census?

In the 1861 census for Wales there is only one girl of similar name born in Ireland and having a father named John Kelly.
She is listed as Maria Kelly and in that year was 8 years old, so at the time of the Millers Court murder would have been 35 years old.
Her father was listed as a fireman and the family lived in Gelligaer, Glamorgan.

Hello Chris. Thanks for posting that.

I suppose I must have a go at subsequent censuses for follow up. Interesting if John is John Henry.

                      Cheers.

The clue to finding the birth of James Henry Kelly [ 1911 census] is through his marriage certificate, which will have his father's name and witnesses who could be family members.

James Henry Kelly married Constance Mary Carruthers in June 1896 in West Derby. 8b 621

He seems a year or two younger than the soldier but that is not important. Birth place seems to fit.
