Hello Debs. Thanks. Curious. Mine indicated boot maker and living at home.
Cheers.

There were two born the same year and place, Lynn.
One with a father named James, a cordwainer, one with a father named Richard, a gardener. The Scots Guard's father was named Richard.
Here are the two different men in the 1871 index. By 1881, our man would be listed in London (or abroad) rather than Wales and his place of birth could simply be given as Wales, in that case.

Edit: It looks like the Scots Guards were in Dublin 1880 through to July 81 at least.

The mention of both Kelly and Davies living on the same row (albeit decades later), and the connection to iron working, really ring some bells...
I suggest that this is an area in which we perhaps should be concentrating our efforts!
Hi All,
I'm having a real job finding the same Dalton family in the 1881 census. It looks, at the moment, as though they may have spread out. The only Irish-born James of about the right age to be the soldier's father is serving as an Able Seaman on the "Lisbon" at Liverpool. Nicholas (assuming it is the same one) is an inmate in the Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum in Abergavenny. The younger James is, I think, a Boy 1st Class on HMS Cambridge. I'm still looking for William, Thomas himself & Margaret, who is definitely listed as a daughter of James (Senior) in 1871, but last in the list of children.
Regards, Bridewell.
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.
Further to the above, the only Margaret Dalton I can find, of the right age and in Wales, is working as a General Servant at the Boar's Head Hotel in Swansea in 1881. The licensee's wife, Hannah M Downay, is shown as born in Carmarthenshire, but Margaret Dalton as Swansea-born. An error?
Addition: Ancestry doesn't help with any detail, unfortunately, but there was a Margaret Dalton who married, in the 3rd quarter of 1882 - in Limerick.
Regards, Bridewell.

I haven't found the Mary Ann Dalton who was 16 in 1871, unless, in 1881, she's lying about her age and is the 18-year-old nursemaid living at 9, John St, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, employed by an accountant named Henry Pascoe. It seems improbable, but the next family on the census list is called Davies, which I thought worth noting.

There are a couple of possibles in Berriew, presumably the same extended family. There isn't any Irish connection that I can find, although there is a Mary Jane. She's only 14, though, in 1881, so probably too young? She has 4 brothers living at home, and two sisters. Looks as though she got married in 1890 though, so I think she's out.
Regards, Bridewell.

I don't think it's Dalton. Harries doesn't look promising either as the only sister is a bit old, called Elizabeth & born in Wales also.
I'll try John Henry SIMON now, unless someone else is already tackling that:
Re SIMON: father is John too (!) but there's no Irish connection and no sister close enough in age to be a likely MJK
Will try BEEDLES.
Regards, Bridewell.
Hi Bridewell.
Thanks for all your hard work with these!
I had the same problems you did with the Daltons when I tried to have a look for them in 1881 after your plea. I have a feeling that since you found James Snr. was still around in 1891, it may be that the details of the family (those still living as a family unit) were mis-transcribed in 1881 (wrong surname) or that the page they appear on was damaged, lost or destroyed. It just seems odd that they all went missing in 81.
I'll help out with a few later today. I'll start with Jones and that list section if you haven't already done any of those?
I'm also interested in any that you look into who are definitely untraceable in any of the records and may have given a false name. Just to see the extent to which this happened with soldiers.
