Thanks for the pic, Stephen. LOL. It says the hair dresser is A. Cohen. Maybe we need to take another look at Aaron Davis Cohen. LOL.

Hi ,Rob, can't tell you if it was Alf's, sorry. My usual barber's name was Charlie,he was Greek and his shop was in Christian Street, just round the corner from Berner street. My memeory is playing trick's on me, I'm thinking If I ever saw the name " alf's " on the barber's sign in Berner st. What I do remember he was a stocky bloke, dark hair well combed back, and mustache, black tie , white shirt and a white jacket, he was in his late 40s early 50s, also that he laughed when I asked him about the barber's shop haveing something to do with " jack the ripper ". All the best, Agur.Originally posted by Robert View Post

The Hairdresser's name was Reginald O. Hair. My grandfather knew him.Originally posted by Fisherman View Post...and with two signs, saying "Haircutting" and "Hair Cuttng". One wonders what the difference was. Perhaps, though, the severed head had the answer ...?
The best,
Fisherman
Since he was the onky one who did the cutting, the sign made sense.

Hi Tom, I,m not thinking of the Chapman murder site, I'm not sure but I think it had somthing to do with the parallel street to Berner st now Henrique st, Batty st was the site, I think, but what I am sure is that I had my hair cut in Berner st, and there was a close nitted Jewish community that lived above the shop's, there was also talk in the area that there was a barber's shop of petticoat lane, which also had something to do with the Whitchapel murder's.Originally posted by Tom_Wescott View PostHi Niko. And you're sure you're not thinking of the Chapman murder site, which was located behind a barber shop? However, I think that shop closed in the 60's. So, perhaps Matthew Packer's old residence had become a barber shop by the 70's? That would be awesome if you got your hair cut in Packer's place.
Yours truly,
Tom Wescott
I remember visiting there a few times but the barber's was closed. I used to enjoy listening to the old folk in my area as a kid, especially when they talked about " Jack the ripper " things about the Burner Club, the murder sites and them sort of thing's, by the way the barber's I visited as a kid was Jewish, ok then mate all the best, Agur.

"Why is there a chap from Greyfriars School standing extreme right? What was he doing in the East End?"
You reckon he was a cut above the rest?

Hello Stephen.
"There was, though, a barbershop on nearby Ellen Street shown here in the 1930s with a severed head in the window."
Hmmm, I have known barbers with shaky hands shaving people, but this . . . ?
Cheers.

You get your hair cut when you get a haircut.

Now, now Tom. You know perfectly well that Packer's shop was demolished decades earlier. There was, though, a barbershop on nearby Ellen Street shown here in the 1930s with a severed head in the window.Originally posted by Tom_Wescott View PostSo, perhaps Matthew Packer's old residence had become a barber shop by the 70's? Barber's in Berner st.
Hi everyone, as I've said before I grew up in the East End, in the late 70s, I visited Berner st, curious about the Whitechapel murder's I went to cut my hair in a barber shop which was then located on the opposite side to Harry gosling primary school, I remember there was a barber's, a newsagent, and a fruit and veg shop, above the shops there were dwellings, mainly ocupied by elderly jews, I use to get the impression that there was close netted community atmosphere as everyone seemed to know each other, that was not rare as the same in the street where I lived, we all knew each other.
The reason I went to cut my hair at this barber's, was because I had heard in the area that this barber's shop had somthing to do with the murder's. When I sat on in the barber's chair and he started cutting I asked him what did this barber's shop have to do with the murder's, he answered apparently one of the suspect of the murder's had worked as a barber there,I can't remember if he told me a name, he also told me that one of the victim's had been murdered in this street " I know" I told him. Was it Kozminski or was it Chapman ? or maybe none, and there was no connection with the barber shop and the murder's,all the best, Agur.

Hey Tom, sorry should have been more specific, I meant the part from Commercial Rd to Fairclough Street.Originally posted by Tom_Wescott View PostHi Garza. Are you referring to the entirety of Berner Street (i.e. from Commercial to Backchurch lane) or just the part that runs from Commercial Rd to Fairclough St.?
Yours truly,
Tom Wescott
From maps and pictures I thought that part of the street would be longer, but it really isn't, its quite a short (part of the) street.
