Ah, but this was a livery company, which is not, and never was, the same as a trade union: http://cityandlivery.co.uk/the-city-...companies.html

In fact, they had more in common with freemasonry: http://cityandlivery.co.uk/the-city-...nd-freema.html

Oops. I really hope this isn't going to trigger a conspiracy theory discussion!

Well done Joshua, i have to say i was not even sure there would be an organisation in 1888. not really a Trades union as John also pointed out, and certainly nothing like the teamsters.

                No problem.

I wrote "And he did not give the name of his wife and children at the inquest."

Not as you wrote above, "the names".

                  FYI,

The London Carmen's Trade Union (LCTU) was founded in 1888.

Unite would be my guess, too. Before that, I daresay it would have amalgamated into the Transport & General Workers' Union, which got superseded by Unite.
                      Kind regards, Sam Flynn

                        Steve,

The London Carmen's Trade Union was established in 1888, renamed the National Union of Vehicle Workers in 1914 and amalgamated with other unions to form the Transport and General Workers Union in 1922.

Yes, Gareth, you're right - TGWU (via the National Union of Vehicle Workers). Some of their early records are still in existence, apparently.

That would be my guess too Gareth. However I think some oil tanker drivers are in GMB.

                              • Is there a link between trades union membership and serial killing?

                                Anyone?

                                No?
