Dorothy Parker, the US columnist, has a parrot which she called Onan, "because he spilled his seed on the ground"!

Masturbation can have a detrimental effect on an individual if it ends up with an individual relying on such practices instead of a healthy sexual relationship with another person (or heck even multiple persons).

The Victorian belief in the dangers of self abuse does have a kernel of truth behind it.

A friend just sent this link round, curiously. Anyway, it seems pertinent - illustrating a 19th century view on the dangers and dire consequences of onanism...

    Hello all,

I believe Kelloggs cornflakes were designed to prevent young men from masturbating. Perhaps he couldnīt afford them?

Somebody once told me that masturbation can be rather pleasant.

And specifically, there was a longish item from Aug 22nd 1888, a clipping from which is attached here. I think it's plain here that masturbation is meant - presumably the objector would have been Ok with restraint if it had been to prevent self-harm, which he'd probably have viewed as a medical purpose.
    Thanks for that

    Issue cleared up then!

    Thanks that's pretty clear then!

hm I'm not sure, people who tend to have a problem with self mutilations do internalise their pain alright, but it doesn't mean they can not snap against someone else. most of the time they're over sensitive emotionally, and if being extremely hurt by someone they can be just as violent toward that very person. they're not safe from snaping against the person who is hurting them inside in a moment of emotional distress. now my words are a bit messy i hope you know what i mean. friday night...
