'Diary'?

I have always mentally rolled my eyes when I hear what Maybrick allegedly wrote referred to as the "Maybrick diaries" since there has only ever been one and only one such diary supposedly written by the Liverpool cottonbroker, as far we know.

There isn't even one diary, it's not a diary. And Maybrick wasn't a cotton broker, although he is often referred to as such I believe that, correctly, he was a cotton merchant.

Yes I would agree that the text of the existing book doesn't really qualify as a "diary" -- more like a first-person narrative or dramatic monologue, though it was designated as a "diary" early on. Thanks also for the correction as to James Maybrick's occupation.
