  • Some further info about THOMAS TAYLOR CUTBUSH

The following legal notice in The Times (15 June 1892) tells us what little we knew about Thomas Taylor Cutbush, father of Thomas Haynes Cutbush.

"Thomas Taylor Cutbush one of the persons interested in the said hereditaments left England in November 1866 for Wellington, New Zealand and in or about the year 1871 went to Melbourne. In the year 1885 he is believed to have resided in Pickles Street, Port Melbourne. The said Thomas Taylor Cutbush if living or his representatives if dead are on or before the 7th November 1892 to come in and prove their claims at the Chambers of Mr. Justice Chitty at the Royal Courts of Justice, Strand, London or in default thereof the Court will make such order as may be just."

The fact that when he left England in 1866 he went to Wellington is confirmed by the following notice, which also tells us that in New Zealand he married a woman named Agnes Ingles Stoddart who died in 1870.

    8 October 1870

    DEATHS:
July 17, at Wellington, Agnes Ingles, wife of Mr. Thomas Taylor Cutbush and daughter of the late Mr. James Stoddart, aged 20 years.

However, grief does not appear to have weighed too heavily upon Thomas as he remarried just two months later.

    10 December 1870

    MARRIAGES:
September 24 at Wellington, Mr. Thomas Taylor Cutbush to Miss Frances Augusta Evelyn Watson.
