In the search area? And the transients lived in lodging houses which were turned over so frequently that the police (most of them) became convinced he didn't live in such an establishment.

True but I doubt that that fact was in his mind when he planned the killings. The fact is that premeditated serial killers (albeit of random victims) tend to live on the periphery of their killing zones. Why do you think that JTR might have been different? The pattern, with the exception of MJK (and that was an altogether different killing), was for a progressive move further from his base with each killing - typical of intelligent serial killers.

I doubt these were planned in the sense Jack knew who he wanted to kill specifically on the night as he headed out, but rather in the beginning at least, he roamed the area, blended in, visited the various pubs/establishments and observed, decided and then acted without any real regard for where he was killing until he was at the scenes.

As the killings went on however, his nerves/emotions/desires seem to have been all over the place, affecting his actions/decisions.

Nichols: Buck's Row (out the centre).

Chapman: More confident (near the centre).

Stride: With intense police/investigations on the case, he goes out the centre of Whitechapel again, towards the outskirts, and to make matters worse, the attempt on her is botched...

Eddows: ...so confused, angry and thriving still for a kill, he ends up in mitre square, with the next best victim he can find, and in a dark quiet area from the centre, on the outskirts, in the city, out the way again, he kills her. He then heads back into Whitechapel, home.

Kelly: You then have him inside, which could be a combination of the nerves and the thrill of a kill battling with one another in his already fragile state of mind. Therefore a kill indoors is a natural compromise, where he can indulge both of these frustrations, with regained confidence and regardless of how close to the centre of Whitechapel he is.

Bah, it's Sunday evening, my brain has switched off, but hopefully you get the idea. Just my rambling thoughts for the night.
