Something new to kick off the new boards
This is an exercise I did some time back and was meaning to post
It is a copy of all those listed as "prostitute" in the infirmary registers from 1885 to early 1887
Two are listed as living at Millers Court and there are some familiar names - Mary A Conly (sic), Emily Holland and Emma Smith (but apparently too young to be the one who died in early 1888)
I will be continuing this into the rest of 1887.
These will also be posted at:

Thank you, Chris, for the information you have provided.

One quarter of the women listed above have a sexually transmitted disease (STD) which was not uncommon in that day and age. These diseases were not fully understood, and therefore not effectively diagnosed and treated. Also, it was most likely under-reported in medical records. I am interested in this, not only as a social study of the period, but also because syphilis has been put forth as a motive, or factor, by several authors over the years writing about the Whitechapel Murders.

Using the data from the link in the above post, I have produced a survey of the general populaton. All lines 1888.

    Roy

      Hi Roy,

You need to add "chancre" and "tabes dorsalis" to your list - these were also venereal diseases. Having done a similar survey, I found that the vast majority of VD sufferers were prostitues, closely followed by dock labourers - no surprises there! The following graph shows the "Top Six" occupations to suffer from STDs:

Chris Scott ought to be able to help you, and he was the stalwart who input the Whitechapel Infirmary records mentioned above, and which I used to produce that histogram. I attach my copy of the spreadsheet as a zipped CSV file, which you can import into Excel:

          Infirmary.zip

The hard work is all Chris Scott's, however - all I did was correct a few spelling errors in street names and some personal names (these were in the original, not introduced by Chris). I've also added another column showing the streets in which the patients lived for easier filtering/searching purposes and to enable more fine-grained data analysis. I'm halfway through adding a "Sex" column, for the same reasons.

Enjoy - and kudos once again to Mr Scott.
          Kind regards, Sam Flynn

There is a database of hospital records, hosted on the National Archives website:
The Hospital Records (HOSPREC) Database was the result of a collaborative project between the Wellcome Library and The National Archives to bring together information about the existence and location of the records of UK hospitals. This information includes: the administrative details of the hospitals, and their status or type the location and covering dates of […]

That should tell you what records survive and where they are held, but it doesn't appear to include workhouse infirmary records. For these, your best bet is probably the National Register of Archives:
The official archive of the UK government. Our vision is to lead and transform information management, guarantee the survival of today's information for tomorrow and bring history to life for everyone.

That includes links to online catalogues at Access to Archives:
Backorder UK domains or auction your own with UKBackorder.uk. Our platform offers a seamless process to secure expiring domains and sell your own UK domains through auctions. No catch, no fee.

                  Hi Joel
In Sam's zip file the date of admission is column A and the date of discharge is column I
Let me know if you are interested in a particular date or entry and I will post the original entry
                  Glad it's been of use

Thanks for helping Joel out, Chris.

I've produced a new version of the file - this time with added SEX !!! I've also added a "Record Number" in Column A, simply for ease of reference.

Unfortunately, it's now just over the limit for posting on Casebook, but you can "Right Click → Save As" on this link to download the spreadsheet.

I reason too, that for every case we see in medical records, there were others we don't see. Due to the social stigma attached, some people may have not sought treatment. Or tried to treat it themselves.
