Surely if you are intent on murder and you are brandishing a long blade knife which you subsequently use to cut the victims throat and then rip open the abdomen why not simply use the knife in the first instance.

For clarity, Trev, I’m not indulging in idle speculation when I say that the Ripper throttled his victims before cutting their throats, I’m citing the evidence that emerged through the postmortem and crime scene examinations. Swollen and protruding tongues, floridity in hand and neck tissues, clenched fists and so forth. Arterial jetting also proved beyond doubt that Chapman and Kelly were lying down as their throats were cut. Dr Brown said as much regarding Eddowes. The Ripper’s mode of attack might not make much sense to you, but it served him well. Eminently so given the fact that he escaped conviction.

Going straight for the throat with a knife, with a struggling and unsubdued woman, would be a recipe for disaster.

Which is exactly what happened with McKenzie, and similarly with Stride, both hardly disasters from the killers perspective.
If quick enough the victim goes into shock.

This is mere speculation, but maybe the Ripper got them in a necklock? Enough pressure in the right place and somebody is going down straight away. I have actually seen somebody do this to somebody. They went limp almost straight away, and he lowered them to the floor. They were out for a couple of seconds, dazed or temporarily unconscious.
