    Let's discuss.

    Hello DLDW. Thanks.

Discussion instead of transaction? OK. But whence the coins?

    Cheers.

Was there time for this at Mitre sq?

    Cheers.

I meant if they went into the Square to do some sort of business or have a discussion. Or at least that's what Eddowes thought. Hey let's go down there where it's private. Okay. Then attack commences once in the darkness. Something along those lines.

Your question was essentially addressed by errata Brenda, but I would just add that in the case of the Canonical Murders, whether the victims were actively soliciting at the time they met their killer must be considered an important factor.

To wit...we only know that 2 were. Speculation is used to assume anything further.

    All the best

Prostitutes engage in a (mostly) illegal activity: in the Ripper's era, prostitutes would literally take you to a dark place that they knew was safe from the police and from other witnesses. It was a serial killer's dream.

Its all those things. It's because no one keeps track of the comings and goings of prostitutes. They tend to disappear from areas because they find employment, move to a higher or lower class neighborhood, make enough to take care of themselves for a short while, die from violence, disease, hunger, drugs or drink. Because of the social unacceptability of the profession, people tend to not even look at prostitutes, or homeless people, or beggars. Most prostitutes do not have family that knows where they are, or care. They are not married. Many have children but do not have custody of those children. Most of them have no one to even notice they are missing, much less report it.

Prostitutes routinely engage in extremely unsafe behavior with strangers. Getting in their car, taking them to a secluded area... drug dealers engage in similarly unsafe behaviors, but street dealers still tend to be men. The job description of a prostitute makes her the perfect victim. The fact that no one cares if she lives or dies until she is brutally murdered is just an added bonus. And typically if you try to report a prostitute missing, there isn't a lot cops can do, even if they are willing to do it. Prostitutes don't want to be found by cops. Today there is something of a safety network between streetwalkers. It doesn't keep anyone from getting killed, but it does mean that women notice when someone doesn't come back. Typically if the person isn't back the next day, the other women will report her missing. And now there is a safe way of doing that without them getting arrested for their troubles.

And none of this yet exists for the boys on the streets, the male prostitutes, who are becoming the largest pool of serial killer victims. Evidently the only person harder to identify than a prostitute is a teenage male prostitute. I think as many as one in four male prostitutes are never identified. No one will admit that they knew a young boy selling himself on the street. Admitting the knowledge without having previously reported it is an admission of guilt.

Payment for what? That could have a very interesting answer indeed. If not for sexual services then what other type? If it was a copycat.

    My Ripper Profile

    My Ripper Profile:
    • White male
    • aged 25 to 40
    • Unemployed but picking up odd jobs, he has a lot of employment anxieties.
    • Impoverished but with sporadic money coming in, enough for alcohol, a bite of food or occasionally a bed, has slept on the street many times.
    • Generally honest but not above stealing food or other small items.
    • Strong but not unusually so. Healthy but beginning to break down, either to disease or alcoholism.
    • History of problems with women both socially and sexually
    • Possible sexual abuse in childhood, either from a parent or older siblings.
    • Religious confusion - all things are either "good" or "evil", "black" or "white"
    • All of his problems are exacerbated by a massive alcohol addiction. He's been drinking long and hard enough for cognitive abilities to be affected. Alcoholism which has been causing mood swings and outbursts. May have possibly lost employment due to missing work because of hangovers.
    • A history of failed relationships and friendships where he is unable to understand what went wrong.
    • Recently cast out of a situation where he felt "accepted"...i.e. a group of friends, a relationship, family circle, a work group...something happened where he felt he had been unbearably misunderstood.

Has blamed himself for his shortcomings for many years, but is now lashing out at others (literally! )

In short, a guy under a lot of mental stress.

Drop a couple of coins on the ground at her feet as payment, then as she kneels to pick them up loop the handkerchief around her neck and jerk her upright? Possible. Or if you want to get a little more creative, hook the kerchief in her mouth like a gag and haul her upright that way. It can control a person equally well, and doesn't leave ligature marks. Because the instinct is to bite down on the cloth to keep it from ripping through your cheeks, it keeps a person relatively quiet, and probably prevents tell tale injuries to the mouth and face.
