Agreed about the time. It was a minor point. There are MANY better indicators than asking for the time.
Cheers.

This is true
From Kate Eddowes inquest. PC Hutt's testimony
"Coroner] How often did you visit the prisoners? - About every half-hour. At first the deceased remained asleep; but at a quarter to twelve she was awake, and singing a song to herself, as it were."
I think there are at least 10 good reasons for wanting to know the time. Perhaps she wanted another drink? Or just wanted to get her bearings - most of us check our watch to see what time it is just so we know where we are with things, whatever those things/plans are.
Again, I don't see how wanting to know the time means she was meeting someone. It would be a fair old stroke of luck if she had been let out around the time she was supposed to meet someone, and I doubt any killer would arrange to meet and just hang around until the police decide to let her go.
From policy testimony, the two connecting issues were knowing the time and getting home. Seems to me she wanted to know the time to understand exactly how much hot water she was in with John Kelly.
What would be time-dependant then? Certainly meeting someone at a pre-arranged place/ time, but also the pubs closing. Some (most?) of the doss houses closed at certain times. Eddowes may have just wanted to get the attention of the warden. Or she may have been still dopey the first time and later forgotten that she had already asked the time.
It should be early in the show. Just wiki it. Although, the actor who plays Druitt is a very good actor. Christopher Hayerdahl. There is also an Outerlimits starring the great and wonderful Cary Elwes for all the there was no Ripper supporters. Best explanation about that one too. Heh heh.
I don't think so Lynn, other than Eddowes specifically asking what time it was, have you anything else that suggests that they are supposed to be nearly oblivious of the time?
Hi Mr Lucky
It's strange talking to my alto ego! However, it's a myth, the LVP peoples were concerned with the time no less than we ourselves today
Eddowes upon waking would have been totally unaware as to the time. For all she knew it was Sunday morning. It was natural of her to enquire as to which period of the day she was waking up to.
Of course if you require her to have had an arranged clandestine meeting in the corner of Mitre Square with some rabid Fenian, then it's imperative that the reason for her asking the time is obviously down to the fact that she was working to a timeline, and needed to know the time.
Mr Cates is a strong believer in evidence, he's forever asking poster's for evidence to back their theories. The thing is, Mr Cates takes evidence and turns it into fantasy. The above illustration says it all really
Weren't LVP supposed to be nearly oblivious of the time?

Yes, definitely Christopher Eccleston! Think I`ve found your program, but there are so many episodes. Can you remember if it was in season one or two, or the title? He doesn't turn into a zombie or a vampire, does he?
Hello Rifkah,
Read a travel article from the late 1880s by an american who said that english women looked good well into their later years, which was probably due to their active lifestyle. American women (He said) were much less robust, and remained delicate and frail - and more feminine. I don't think he had met very many frontier women, though. Am trying to find said article again, but no luck so far.
Always thought a walking pace was at about 4 miles per hour.
Hello Chris and Lynn,
Still ploughing through anything I can find on Kate and Kelly to see if I should change my mind, but it will take time, not too much free time available just now.
Hello all,
In the meantime, my list of five questions:
1. Was the body pulled out of the Thames really Druitt's?
2. Exactly how old was Mary Jane Kelly?
3. Did Kate Eddowes really say she thought she knew who the killer was?
4. Who did write the Dear Boss and Lusk letters and the postcard?
It strikes me that she was insistent on knowing the time. Weren't LVP supposed to be nearly oblivious of the time?
Cheers.
