I'll keep the whole Scottish thing going then:
Donald Sutherland Swanson.
"When you say, Seaside Home, officer, do you mean the convalescent home in Brighton?"
"Why go all that way?"
"When exactly did this identification take place?"
"What makes you think that a positive identification in a 'one on one' situation after all those months/years would have stood up in a court of law anyway?"
"What's the real reason why the witness wouldn't testify? Could it be that the identification was not as strong as is claimed?"
"Are you sure the name was Kosminsky?"
"Why were the City CID watching a man in Whitechapel?"
"Are you telling porkies, Chief Inspector?"
On a more serious note, why does the marginalia name the suspect, but not the witness? It was hardly likely to matter after all those years, especially as there was little or no likelihood of the details coming to light in the lifetime of those involved - if ever? Actually, I think this warrants a thread in its own right. What does everyone else think?

Reason: addition
I won't always agree but I'll try not to be disagreeable.
Is there any other murder case out there in which the devotees obsess over time travel?
Count me among the guilty. I often think about it. But why are some scared to confront the Ripper? There is nothing to prevent us from taking a machine gun into into the past, no?
Because we do not know who the Ripper was, if I had to have dinner with just one person I would NOT pick any of the suspects nor any of the police officials. It's too likely we would swing and miss. I suppose I would select Mary Kelly. Good chance an interview might shed light on her murder, and maybe the series of murders, but regardless that interview would sell!
Seriously, it is surprising that no one has mentioned to interview the victims.
David -I went looking- is this the book by Didier Chauvet ? Blimey ! He published a whole biography of Mary Kelly, when what is known about her could fit on a 'post it'; I see he describes her as 'generous' and 'courageous' on the dust jacket (!).
I liked one of the reader's review of this book -'a bit short'
I must say that Mr Chauvet does look like Denis Nilson from his photo.
My mind is boggling so much that I may have to read the wretched book out of curiosity...
and know what you do now(or not in my case.lol)who out of all the Ripper suspects/members of police/witnesses would you like to spend dinner with while questioning them?

still learning
I think I would like to meet the person who wrote those words on the wall and clear that mystery up once and for all.
