I'm curious what the interior section of Spitalfields would have actually looked like at the time of the murders? I see photos and drawings of the exterior from streets in the area in the early 1900's, but I'm having trouble understanding the interior.
Was it a ring of buildings around the outside, and then the inside was like a flea market (people set up with their own wares?) Or like a Farmer's Market where there were more solid stands and structures for people to display their merchandise? What would have been sold? (presumably food, fruits, vegetables, meat? clothing? housewares? anything and everything?) It seems today to be covered, was this true back then? or would the interior of the market have been open to the sky?
Are there any decent photos/drawings/descriptions of the interior or how it was laid out? I haven't found much more than a snippet here or there about the market pre 1900.
Thanks
