I am coming down to London at the end of October and would like to do a Ripper Tour. Does anyone have any advice as to which, if any of the official walks/tours is better ? i have been to a couple of sites myself previously however not with a guide. Failing that should any local to the area on here wish to volunteer their expertise then it would be most welcome .

I too will one day get around to a ripper tour. Can anyone advise me whether the Ten Bells offer accommodation ? I see there are many rooms upstairs from photo's. I would be interested in any other related pubs, ie The Princess Alice etc.

A long time ago, map in hand, I did my own first tour of the sites, and got many things totally wrong. Then, back in the early 90:s, I believe (or was it the late 80:s?), I did my first guided tour in Martin Fido´s company. It turned out that we had a mutual friend, and a few calls and a flight later, I found myself at the Ten Bells (which I think was called the Jack the Ripper at that stage), drinking beer and preparing for what was to become a very fascinating, private tour. My future wife did the tour with us, and afterwards, what I described as the most memorable night of that evening, she described as more or less totally weird...

Erm...er...thanks for sharing, Fish It's great you feel yourself to be amongst such close friends...heheh

Ashkenaz, the Bells don't do accommodation (probably just as well, if the state of their khazis is anything to go by) but it's an easy place to sit through hours in the daytime. Various hotels in the area of varying prices and quality, though.

The Frying Pan, now The Shiraz used to do rooms till few years ago. The stopped but I had heard they had started up again. Caz may know a little more.

The Sheraz has started up again with the rooms over the restaurant. John Bennett and Laura Prieto have stayed there quite recently. Not sure about how much they charge for rooms though.

Does anyone know if the upper floors of The Ten Bells are, in fact, used for anything? With some reno work, they could add to the owner's cash flow by being rented out as offices or flats. Shame to waste all that space so close to the City.

When I was there in September the Bells was covered in tarp from roof to base. Work was going on in the roof area for, what I was told, a resturant.

Someone recently posted a photo of The Bells shrouded in tarps on the East End Photos thread and I assumed that it was simply (at long last) being repainted. Glad to hear that the extra space might be put to a useful purpose. If it is a restaurant, I hope they'll do a decent steak & kidney.

Can't add much to this, I'm afraid. John and Laura can advise on room rates, and from the photo they showed me there seems to have been a huge improvement in room quality.

I can't imagine anyone finding a poppadum in their bed these days, like Liza did once - nor a middle-aged man in his jim-jams by the old communal wash basins/loos/broken shower, inviting us to a 'party' in his room.

No, I'm sure things could only have got better and it isn't a case of out of the old Frying Pan and into the fire.
