    sewer system

Hello Jerry. But I wonder--as an aside--what the sewer system was like? Could one have escaped through there?

    The best.

Gotcha covered, Lynn. Check it out.

        muchas gracias

Hello Paddy. Many thanks! That hits the spot.

Hmm, looking it over seems to indicate the possibility of one popping down below and coming out several blocks away and emerging in a less vulnerable area.

But surely someone has thought of this before?

About that book. Sounds good. Any outrageous theory that has no evidence to back it? Maybe Queen Victoria doing the mutilating while Gull is driving the royal coach? Perhaps her majesty even left a diary?

        All the best, mate!

It does say Sewer Hands indeed Jerry, and in quite a few other reports too which suggests a central news report rather than a specific newspaper.

          Lynn,

Check out the Morning Advertiser dated 2 Oct 1888, specifically the passages relating to searches.

I would think that the Underground offered a better...and less stinky, underground escape avenue....and it was being expanded in the East End at the time of the murders.

If he pops down via a sewer grate, he has to pop back up through one also...how does he ensure that he is not popping up when someone might see him?

If he uses the Underground, he can escape via the rail lines that merge into the Underground line....and just walk out in some rail yard or switching station.

They did search rail lines for at least one murder that Fall.

            Best regards

              sensible

              Hello Mike. That makes sense.

I wonder about minimal distances from the murder sites to the underground?

                Buck's Row

Hello All. I copy and paste below a note of Chris George from another thread.

"Woods Buildings to the southwest of the Nichols murder location has been suggested by John Bennett and others as providing an excellent escape route from Buck's Row that would have enabled the murderer to get to Whitechapel Road quickly without being seen."

                This is quite helpful.

                The best.

As I wrote in my article, "Escape from Buck's Row" in Ripperologist No. 94, the underground line is right next to and almost beneath the murder site, though at the time (1888) the platform probably did not extend north to where it does now. See here--

                    thanks

Hello Chris. Thanks! Looks like I'll have to invest in back issues of that fine publication.

Then, in the murder of Buck's Row, Jack was able to escape there?

                        Simply put yes.

The killer could have headed east, towards Brady Street or west toward Bakers row.

Another route was west again for a few yards then a left turn, across into Winthrop st and into an alley called Woods Buildings. Once through there he was on to the busy thoroughfare of Whitechapel Road....and away.
