I would do what Captain Kirk did in "Wrath of Kahn," and change the rules so that I could stay longer than five minutes. I would also bring a camera with me. When Jack comes out of Mary's door, he would have no idea what that sudden flash in his face was all about and would just be mildly freaked out as I ran away. (Cameras of that day produced not just a flash but a big and loud puff of smoke, didn't they?) Then, with time to spare, I'd go and find where Michael Kidney was living, knock on his door, and punch him full in the face seconds before beaming back to the 21st century. Not nice of him to have been an abusive boyfriend to Liz Stride.

This is only a slightly different answer than I've given before to this sort of time travel question, which has been asked a few times before.

    Certainly not, BB.

You want to kill Hitler, who would have been almost nothing without pacifists.

    David

I'd clock the cry of "Oh Murder!" and think, Strewth, it's the Ripper! and bugger off to the Ten Bells where, with my modern £20 note, I'd say, "Pints all round, landlord! In fact - pints for the entire population of London!"

And then I'd wake up, 'cos this is just a load of old bollcoks, isn't it?

    Time travel my arse...

    Hi BB,

just realize everybody wants to timetravel to kill X or Y.

Maybe someone will come from the future and murder us tonight...

    Amitiés,
    And take care,
    David

    Hi Jukka

Though the Osmonds have a lot to answer for, I think it's going a bit far to assign Jack to their family tree.

I do believe that the music of Little Jimmy Osmond can have a big role in fighting crime. If only police officers could be issued with CDs of this

then crime might be driven off the streets for ever.

    Hello Robert!

Thank you for showing the "Grand American Taste"

The Finnish cover I heard in the mid-1970s was pretty similar in content.

But that one was sung by a 15-year old Finnish girl named Anna!

Somehow I felt more comofortable with that performer...

To the topic; do you mean, that MJK was a liverpudlian?!

Or that Jack the Ripper was related to the Osmond family?!

    All the best
    Jukka

I would have a portable music system with me, and play the following at top volume :

Both killer and victim would flee, screaming "Oh murder."

Imagine you are gifted with the ability to travel back in time. It's a one-off deal and you can only visit the past for five minutes.

The place that you arrive is outside the door of 13 Millers Court on the early morning of 9 November 1888. It's dark and inside the small room, you can faintly hear the murderer carrying out his slaughter of Mary Jane Kelly.

You know your time is short. What would you do knowing that this would be your one and only time to positively identify the killer?

Knowing that a frenzied and armed murderer was in the room, would you have the courage to kick the door down knowing what you'd find inside and that he would be in very close proximity to you?

    The clock is ticking...

    Richard
    A very interesting question. I will take the time right now and let's see, what there is to do;

0,01: checking out the time on the pavement!

0,30; taking slightly off the curtain...

1,00: memorising bloody( ) carefully the features of MJK and the Ripper for the sketches, while coming back!

    1,30: checking the time left!

2,00: making sure my butcher's knife from my meat-industry days is still in its holster in my pocket!

2,30: wondering, if I should make a different turn to history or not!

3,00: thinking about this bloody report, that I'm making right now!

    4,00: Freezing!

5,00: the bugger has gone. Bloody hell, I took the door-key to my pocket. No chance to take it back to the door!

So, this is everything coming to my mind during this short period of time!

    How about it?

    All the best
    Jukka

(PS. Sorry, folks, I forgot to mention; taking the "curtain" aside every now and then having a look at the event, since I didn't have the guts to change history after all!)

    Hi Fanoofez,

Surely if you are close to the armed maniac in Millers Court, the question
should have read "what is the second thing you would do?"
